WAR PREPARATIONS. AIR BAKER TO ADDRESS SENATE COMMITTEE. AVASHINGTON, January 25. Mr Newton Baker announces that he intends to address the Senate Committee, detailing America’s war progress. AMERICANS IN ACTION. FIGHTING IN FRANCE. AVASHINGTON, January 25. General Pershing has cabled that the American forces have been in action on the French front on several occasions this week. ALLIED FOOD SUPPLY. APPEAL TO AMERICA. AVASHINGTON, January 26. Lord Rhondda, on behalf of the British French and Italian Governments, cabled to Mr Hoover:—“ Unless you are able to send 75,000,000 bushels of wheat above what you exported to February 1, irrespective of the Canadian exports, I cannot take the responsibility of assuring our people that there will be sufficient food to win the war. It now lies with America to decide whether the Allies shall have enough food to hold out until tho Americans take the field.” Mr Hoover replied: “I will export every grain in America, save the quantity required for normal consumption. AVe will not fail to meet the emergency.” Air Hoover stated that America had already exported 60,000,000 bushels, but it was absolutely necessary for the country to reduce its present consumption by 30 per cent.
