SOCIAL SCIENCE.

PROPOSED UNIVERSITY COURSE.

[From Our Correspondent.]

DUNEDIN, January 24

From the viewpoint of the genertil public, one of the most important of the multitude of subjects 'that have occupied the attention of the University Senato this session is the proposal introduced bv the Rev A. Cameron (Chancellor of Otago University) to frame a social science course, with a degree not only for the regular students, hut also for students who have not been able to undertake study till maturity. Mr Cameron's motions involve a change in the prescription for matriculation, admitting such mature students after examination in a series of subjects, excluding mathematics eutirely and foreign languages, the branches of these subjects involving a drudgery and study which the class of students designated could not, in the vast majority of cases, underake. The degree course proposed may be conveniently called “ an all-English degree.” A modification of Mr Cameron's proposal is I>r Anderson’s, that a ” social science "’ diploma course should bo instituted. This, of course, would not involve any change in the matriculation prescription. ** The whole matter has been referred to the Dunedin Recess Committee to report to the April meeting of the Senate.
