PERSONAL NOTES. Private AVilliam John Fife, who was killed in action in France on October 12, was the only son of Air and Airs Fife, 365, St Asaph Street, City, and was in his twenty-first year. Ho was educated at tho East Christchurch School, and, after leaving school, learned tho coachpainting trade at Messrs Stevens and Sons’. Prior to leaving with the Twenty-fifth Reinforcements he was employed at Messrs Cooper and Pryce’s. He took a keen interest in sailing and motor-boats, and was well known at Redolifrs. He was greatly esteemed by all who knew him. Private Andrew D. Fraser, who died on December 8, in a casualty dressing stat ion in France of wounds received on November 29, was the youngest son of the late Mr Robert Fraser, of Rangioia. He was born and educated in Rangiora and was about twenty-six years oi age. He was a popular young fellow amongst his companions, and at the time lie joined tho Thirteenth Reinforcements had been in the employ oi the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association at Rangiora for about three years.

At la&t. night’s ineeting of the Canterbury Centro of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, Air Eld ridge moved tile following resolution “ That this centre expresses its deepest sympathy with the relatives of tho lato Sergeant-Major Levy in their very sad bereavement.” SergeantMajor Levy, who was recently reported killed in action, was one of the bestknown swimmers in the Dominion and extremely popular. Airs E. A. Lord, of 77, AVilson’s Road, Sydenham, has received advice that her youngest son, Lanco-Corporal S. Lord, was killed in action in October 4. Lance-corporal S. Lord, who was twenty-eight years of age, went away with the Fifteenth Reinforcements. Ho received his education at the Glen tunnel School. Prior to enlisting he was in the employ of AA . Nicholson and Co., of this city.

Sergeant Llewellyn A. Caygiil, killed in action on December 3, was the second son of Air. 0. Caygill, Christchurch. He was twenty-six years of age and was educated at tho Boys’ High School. Suosequently he was on the staff of Alessr s AV. B. Clarkson and Sons, meat exporters. Sergeant Caygill was a well-known figure in cricket cirolos and played with much (success for the Ricearton seniov team. He also took an interest in football, having played for the High School Old Boys’ second fifteen. Sergeant Caygill'loft New Zealand with the Eleventh Reinforcements. He leaves a widow and one child. His elder brother, Regimental Sergeant-Major Ernest R. Caygill, left the Dominion with the Fourth Reinforcements.

Airs Body, AA’inslow, has received word that her fourth son. Private F. P. Body, has been wounded. Private Body left with the Seventeenth Reinforcements. Mrs Body’s second son, Private T. Body, was wounded on October 6.

Airs E. Henderson, 53), Alontreal Street, Sydenham, received advice from the Alinistcr of Defence last week that her son, Private Horace Henderson, was wounded on November 29. A second cablo received yesterday from Base Records states that he was admitted to Fultham Military Hospital with gunshot wounds in the right leg. Airs Henderson also received a cable from her son stating that ho is progressing satisfactorily. News has been received in Dunedin that Private Leslie Chadwick, well known in cricketing circles, has been wounded a fourth tjme and admitted to hospital. His present mishap is a severe shrapnel wound in the neck.

Airs J. S. Barnes, of Cheviot, has received a third cable stating that her husband has been transferred to a convalescent depot, Hornchurch, on December 10. Private Barnes’s younger brother is being invalided home. Rifleman Benjamin Soabourn, who was reported wounded and gassed on November 15, is the second son of the late Mr J. A. Soabourn, of Sydenham. He was born in Sydenham and educated at the AA’altham School. Prior to enlisting ho was engaged in dairy farming in the North Island. He left New Zealand with the third battalion of the New Zealand Riflo Brigade. He also has a brother serving in the same regiment. Airs J. M’Clurg, Ashburton, has received advice that her son, Captain D. W. M’Clurg was admitted to the Officers’ Convalescent, Homo at Brighton on December 6, suffering from chronic bronchitis. Mrs AA 7 . Stevens, Ashton, has received advico that her son, Rifleman L. J. Stevens, who left with tho Sixteenth Reinforcements, is being invalided home. Air R. M’Callum, Ashburton, has received advice that his son, Private Stuart G. Al’Callum, is returning to New Zealand. Mrs P. Lennon, East Belt, Ashburton, lias received advico that her son, Lance-corporal AV. P. Lennon, has been admitted to a hospital in France severely wounded. Lance-corporal Lennon left with the Twenty-second Reinforcements. Air J. 'W.vn Irwin has received word that his brother, Sergeant J. G. Irwin, who prior to enlisting was engaged in the process department of the “ Lyttelton Times,” has been wounded seriously in tho abdomen A private cablegram trorii Sergeant Irwin, however, states ♦ hat he is doing well. Another brother. Gunner “Tom” Irwin, who enlisted in Australia, and has been serving for some time with the Australian Artillery, was reported “gassed” in October, but no further information has been receiver! regarding his condition. Airs E. J. Bergamini, 50, Buckley’s Road, Linwood, has been advised that her son, Driver G. H. Bergamini, is dangerously ill in hospital with cere-bro-spinal meningitis. Driver Bergamini. who was recently* awarded the Military Aiedal, was a member of the stereo staff of the “Press” prior to his enlistment. He left with the Fourth Reinforcements.

Mrs J. 0. Crockett, 36, Lincoln .Road, has received cable advico that her nephew, Rifleman J. Torrens, New Zealand Riflo Brigade, was severely wounded in France on November. 20. Rifleman Torrens came to New Zealand live years ago from Derrymore, County Londonderry, Ireland, and joined the New Zealand Rifle Brigade ,of tho Twenty-second Reinforcements. Ho was for some time the champion bomb thrower in the base camp in Franco. Later advice says that lio lifts been removed to an English hospital. Sergeant S. F. AVelsford. wounded, is tho third son of, Mrs AYelsford, of 70, Southampton Street. Sydenham. He went with the Sixth Reinforcements. and saw service on Gallipoli. He left Egypt with tho first draft for France. Ho went through the Verdun, Somme and other battles, and, except for ten days in England, was in tho firing line till ho was wounded, and sent to AYalton-on-Thames Hospital. He was educated at tho Waltham School, and was a keen footballer and swimmer. Ho was a member of the old Sydenham Rifles. Mrs B. Wren, of Palsgrave Street, Linwood, has received intimation from tho Minister of Defence that her eldest eon, Rifleman J. Wren, was admitted to hospital on December 2 suffering from wounds in tho left arm. He left New Zealand with tho Twenty-sixth Reinforcements, attached to the Rifle Brigade. He has two brothers on active service. Mrs E. Heese, 40, Sandyford Street, Sydenham, has received advico from Sir James Allen, Minister of Defence, that her husband, Sergeant B. Heese, was wounded on November 27, sustaining a gunshot wound in the left thigh. A later message _ stated that Sergeant Heese was admitted to hospital in France on November 30. Sergeant Heese, wli.o is thirty-three years of age, is a nativo of Christchurch, and prior to enlistment with tho Twentyfirst Reinforcements, was employed in tho New Zealand Farmers’ Cooperative Association’s grain store in Lyttelton. About wo months ago Sergeant HecisG was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the field.
