A British convoy of merchantmen in the North Sea was attacked on December 12. Six merchant vessels, one British destroyer and four armed trawlers were sunk. Another British destroyer was damaged but reached port. Heavier British vessels sent to cover the convoy did not reach the scene of the action in time. ITALIAN DEFENCE. On the Brenta-Piave front the Italians repulsed enemy attacks after severe fighting near the Col Caprile. Another attack on the lower end of the Brenta Valley was broken up by artillery fire.
