“ I am proud to see that the Prime Minister of England has given voice to what wo in this country believe to be the correct view to take of this war,” said Sir Joseph Ward at the opening of the St .Chair post office on Monday. “ I huvo been preaching a similar doctrine, though in a humbler way, for months, and that is: No matter what the vicissitudes may be in Russia, Italy or the Balkan States, the British Government will never cease its energies until, with the assistance of our bravo Allies, we have achieved all we started out to achieve, and until absolute and pronounced victory has como to our arms. If we do not now gain a victory that will enable Great Britain and her Allies to be the predominant people in fixing the peace terms we shall not have won what we started out, under compulsion, to achieve. We desire to maintain the civilisation of tho world—to see that a barbarous, unscrupulous, and cowardly enemy will not have the opportunity after this war—say, in fifteen or twenty years-—again to _ plunge the world in blood, and wo in New Zealand aro hound to leave no stone unturned to help to that end—to cooperate with the Mother Land and her Allies to see that our brave men who havo mado the supremo sacrifice in this unparalleled war have not given their lives in vain.”

Some striking facts have come to light as tho result of the Mayor’s reference to tho output of dairy produce in the Thames Valiev (states the "Thames Star”). Inquiry has elicited that for tho past year v tho Thames Valley Dairy Company has produced 12344 tons of butter and 1024.) tons of cliecsp, of an approximate value of £335,000. This is a striking illustration of the district’s wealth. An announcement was made some little while ago (states tho “ New Zealand Farmers’ Advocate”) that tliero was every likelihood of phosphatic manures, on which New Zealand so largely depends, bring scarce and dearer than in previous times. Information has now been received that the chief source of supply from tho Pacific Islands will he fully maintained up to the usual average of 26,000 tons yoarlv. Mr Foster, a returned Australian soldier, intends during Christmas week, to endeavour to accomplish a feat which has not yet been attempted, that is to swim across Wellington Harbour, a distance of about seven and a half miles. This attitude was upheld generally, and Mr Corry withdrew his suggestion.

The second valuation for which the new season’s wools have come forward was completed at Dunedin on Saturday. In all about 4700 bales were catalogued. The wools were in very fine condition, mainly accounted for by the clean, plentiful growth of pasture this year and the absence of high winds, the wool thus being remarkably free of foreign matter. Tho basis of the scoured wool was the same as last year, but the condition on tho whole warranted tho higher prices obtained this year. Tho condition, in fact, is said to be better than for many years past. Somq of tho Otago Central wools were particularly good. The top prices realised wero 22id per lb f.or somo halfbred wool, and 23Jd for cross-bred. “ May I beg most earnestly that greater thought be given to tho girl’s future life work, and_ that she be not pushed haphazard into somo respectable occupation, however unsuited sho may be for it?” 6aid Miss Butler, head mistress of the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, in her annua] report. “So many girls who are utterly unfitted to teach, try to enter the teaching profession—and not only do themselves a grave injustice, but also the children who aro entrusted to them. To my mind it is all a part of tho discipline and training of a girl that she should ho taught to choose her future career in those fields where sho is most fitted to work, and where in consequence her work will benefit the community most. It is time that we cease taking a selfish outlook on life, each in our turn hunting for minimum work and maximum pay, and remember our duty to our State and our neighbour. We have paid n high price to learn the value of discipline. and if we moan to maintain our position as world lenders we must remember our responsibilities, and study community interests, and our children must have the best., and only tho best, handed to them, and thev must he taught that each lias his or her station in life, and the work that they will do best is the work for which they are best fitted. There must be no wastage of material. So.. may I ask, that as part of your patriotism you will make it, your business to find the niche in life into which vour daughter will best fit.”
