SPORTING.

/ NEWS AND NOTES,

The Riccarton trainer, R. Longley, had a very successful experience at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting yesterday. ' He had three horses racing—Winter Cherry, Donnata and Phil May—and they all won. In each instance the result was freely anticipated by backers, as they started favourites. . Riding honours were not well distributed at the South Canterbury meeting yesterday. W. Bush, who was making his first appearance in the saddle uince his return from Hawkc's Bay, Biloted R. Longley's three winners, onnata, Winter Cherry and Phil May; and F. E. Jones scored on Brambletye, Bon and Kilbrogan. The remaining winner on the flat, Tremena, |mas ridden by E. Ludlow, while Luff yiton the hurdle, race in the hands of J. Beale.

Count Witte was the .only sire who claimed two winners at the South Canterbury meeting yesterday. Phil May and Tremena, who scored for him, were the only representatives he had at the meeting. Luff had not raced over hurdles prior to his appearance at the South Canterbury meeting. He shaped badly at the initial obstacle and also 'lost ground at the second and third jumps, being a long way in the rear at that stage. Over the last six furlongs, however, he made up his leeway in great style and there was a good deal of merit about his win. He is a well-bred pjeMing, his sire, Golden Knight, being by Wallace—Aura, while his dam, Windy Steppe, by Stepniak—Ventoso, is a member .of the Lady Gertrude family, from which tho late Sir George M'Lean bred so many good performers.

Brambletye had never scored over a mile and a quarter prior to her winning effort yesterday, in the chief tixent at the South Canterbury meeting. She was out in front all the way, iihe pace being slow in the early stages, and her initial' advantage served her well, as she had not much in hand when the winning post was reached. Margerine met with interference more than one© and under all the circumstances she registered a good performance.

Nautical caused some excitement at the South Canterbury meeting yesterday. While doing his preliminary for the Tycho Hack Handicap he got away with his rider, whom ho dislodged When he jumped the hedge into the road. The lad escaped with nothing worse than a severe shaking. The colt careered along the road for several miles before being recaptured. Later in the dav.he was started in the KerryTown Hack Welter Handicap, but he seemed disinolined to face the barrier and he was left at the post. Winter Cherry was responsible for a particularly attractive performance in winning the Tycho Hack Handicap at the South. Canterbury meeting. She got a bump soon after the start and dropped back Jastj where she remained until the straight was reached. Over the last two furlongs, however, she ran past her opponents > in brilliant style and won easily.

Tremena competed twice at the South Canterbury meeting yesterday. In the Tycho Hack Handicap she was one of the pacemakers from the start, but tired over the last furlong, finishing third. Later in the day, in the Flying Handicap, she was not hurried over the early stages and she finished out the six furlongs in good style. Oxenhope shaped disappointingly in the Flying Handicap at the South J Canterbury meeting yesterday. He • seemed unable to pace it with his opi ponents from the rise of the barrier and was last all the way. The Obligado gelding has raced badly all this season and appears to be on the down grade.

Frandocia broke a long succession of faitores when he captured the Mace Memorial Handicap at the Now Brignton Trotting Club's meeting yesterday, his last previous win being in a mile race on the same course in May, 1916. A number of Christchurch horses, claiming engagements at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting, will leave for the north to-night. B: Jarden will) be among the Christchurch visitors at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting, but he will not have any of his horses racing there. Though the three-year-old pacer Albert Cling figures among the acceptors for the Great Northern Trotting Derby his owner has decided not to send him north to fulfil his engagement. The classic race at Auckland 'will thus be reduced to a match between President "Wilson and Queen Chimes. The name of Frank Tracey appeared in error, in place of Frank Henry, in the Electric Handicap at the Greyjnouth Trotting Club's meeting.

NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING CLUB

The v/cather was howery in the morning, and 'it was.not until after the second race that it cleared, the conditions being, fine during the remainder of the day.
