THE WORK IN CANTERBURY*

IMPORTANT MEETING IN CHRISTCHURCTI.

The General Council of the Agricultural, Pastoral and Dairying Industries in the Canterbury Military District, established under the scheme of national efficiency, will meet for the first time to-day. The meeting will be held, in; the hall of the Chamber of Commerce. Representative citizens irt the districi.,' as well as members of th-3 council, have been invited to attend, and it is expected that about one hundred persons will be present. They will meet at a luncheon at T p.m. Tho Mayor of Cliristchurch (Mr ?' H. Holland) will preside at the lun- | cheon. He will propose the toast of ■ " King and Empire,'' and Colonel It. A. Oliaffey, Officer Commanding the District, will reply. Mr J. J. Corry (Mayor of Blenheim) will propose the toast "National Industry," and Mr W. Ferguson, chairman of the National * Efficiency Board, will reply. The b'asiness will be begun at 2.30 p.m., when Mr J. A. Frostick, National Efficiency Commissioner for Canterbury, will preside. He will deliver an address, dealing with the objects of the. gathering, the necessity for national efficiency, and the best means of bringing it about. This will be followed by the roll-call. Nominations then will be received for the position of president of the council and for members of the Permanent Executive Council. Subjects will be dealt with by speakers as follow:—"The More Efficient Organisation of Labour," Messrs J. Talbot, Temuka, and R- O. Dixon, Eyreton; " Co-operative Effort," Messrs C. J. Talbot, M.P., G. Anderson, Mahan, the Sounds, and G. Hall, Hororata; "Machinery Capable of Increasing Production and Reducing Cost," Messrs E. J. Grigg, Ethelton, and R. M. Morten, Tai Tapu; "Preparation for Harvest" and "Preparation for Next Season's Sowing,'' Messrs It. Evans, Kaiapoi, J. T. Buchanan, Little River, W. F. Cleverton, Waimate, and G. A. M'Lean, Amberley; "Rural Industries," Mr W. Pollard, Renwiek, Marlborough, Colonel K. # M'Kenzie, Geraldine, Mr W. Thorn, Richmond, Nelson, and Mr H. Norman, Kaiterangi; "Organisation of Trade and Commerce as it Affects Primary Prod'uetion," Messrs J. J. Corry, Blenheim. II F. Nicol, Ashburton, and A. A. Wilson, Westport. When the meeting resumes at 7.30 p.m., Dr HiJgendorF, of the Agricultural College, will give an address or "Efficient Farming. ' Aspects of th< question will be dealt with, by the following speakers:—"Wl)ether single oi married men are the most profitable workers for tho farmer to employ \n order to get the best results," Messrs J.
