Dr J. Allen Thomson. Director of the Dominion Museum, Wellington, is visiting Lake Coleridge. Mr H. J. Iv. Winstone, who has been on the staff of the Ilangiora post office for the tost ten years, has been appointed postmaster at Ohakune.

Mr J. Wells, .of 589, Madras Street, St Albans, has received word from the Minister of Defence- that his eldest son, Private K. E. Wells, of the Twentieth Reinforcements, has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry on the field of action.

Sir Joseph Ward m.6tored from Invereargill to Duuedin yesterday, and officially opened baths at St Clair. He will arrive in Cliristchurch to-day, and to-morrow' morning lie will receive a deputation on the subject of evening trains on the Lyttelton line. Mrs Bathurst, 40, Harper Street, Sydenham, has received word that her son, Sergeant Horace Bathurst, has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry on the field of action. Sergeant Bathurst enlisted with the Ninth Reinforcements and was wounded in the Soramo battle. He received his education at Sydenham School and was a prominent member of the Sydenham Football Club.

After the final rehearsal of " Elijah" last evening the members of the Christchurch Musical Society marked their appreciation of the conductor's kindness and enthusiasm by giving him a silver-mounted ebony baton. Miss Bishop, one of the oldest members of the society, made the presentation, and expressed the hope that Dr Bradshaw would wield it for many years to come. Dr Bradshaw suitably responded. At a special meeting of the Canterbury Federation of Unions held at the Trades Hall on Saturday evening Mr C. Renn was elected to the position of secretary, vice Mr F. Ellis, resigned. Mr Renn lias for many years been intimately associated with Labour movements, and among other offices held by him were those of president of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council and vice-president of the United Federation of Labour. At present Mr Renn occupies the position of secretary of the Canterbury Typographical Union.
