SIR MACKENZIE BOWELL.

OTTAWA, December 11

The death is announced at Belleville, Ontario, of Sir Mackenzie Bowell, exPremier of Canada.

(The late Sir Mackenzie-'Bowell was born at Rickinghall, Suffolk, England, on December 27, 1825. He went to Canada with his parents in 1833, entered the military service as ensign in the Bellvillo Rifle Company in 1857, and after some service on the,American frontier an 1864 and later, ho was made major in 1867 and lieutenantcolonel in 1872, retiring with that rank in 1874. He represented North Hastings for twenty-live years in the House of Commons, being then called to the Senate. In 1878 he entered Sir John Macdonald's Cabinet as Minister .of Customs, occupying that office for thirteen years. Under Sir John Abbott ho was Minister of Militia, and under Sir John Thompson he was Minister of Trade and Commerce. On the death .of the latter Mr Bowell formed an Administration in December, 1894, the main policy of which was the enforcement of remedial legislation in tho matter of tho Manitoba School question. Having failed to accomplish this object, he retired from the Government on April 27, 1896. He was appointed a K.C.M.G. on January 1, 1895, shortly after becoming Prime Minister.)

Mr Murdoch M’Lean, of the contracting firm of M’Lean and Sons, died this morning while undergoing a surgical operation. His l firm constructed sections of railway at Rotorua and Kaipara, and wero contractors for the Otira tunnel, Wellington dock and other public works. Deceased was Mayor of Mount Albort -Borough and was a prominent Mason. He twice unsuccessfully contested Auckland seats at Parliamentary elections.
