CANTERBURY DRAFTS

LEA YE FOR TRAINING CAMPS. ’The Christchurch and' North Canterbury drafts of the Thirty-fourth Reinforcements paraded at King Edward Barracks yesterday afternoon. The men wore inspected by Colonel R. A. Chaffey, Officer Commanding tho Canterbury Military District, who was accompanied by Major W. O. Morrison and Councillor A. Williams (Deputy-Mayor). The draft was in tho charge of Lieu-tenant-Colonel F. B. Cress well and Captain H. G. Livingston. There was a. largo attendance of relatives and friends at the Barracks.

Councillor Williams, addressing the men, said that tho Mayor (Air H. Holland) was absent from the city meeting hi; son. who was returning from tho war. Tho Alnyor had not forgotten tho departure of the troops, however, and had sent a. telegram apologising for his absence and conveying the sincere prayer of tho citizens of Christchurch for tho safe return of the Reinforcements. ' The Alayor also promised that the welfare of tho men’s dependents would bo kept well in view. Councillor Williams delivered tho city’s message of farewell, and bade tho men Godspeed and a safe return. Colonol Chaffer said that- it- was the tliirtv-fourth occasion that he had farewelled the gallant troops of Christchurch and North Canterbury. Ho always liked to have a look round, and as a result of his inspection that afternoon he could honestly say the draft was as good as any other that had preceded it. He reminded the men of tho grand work accomplished by their comrades and enjoined all to make themselves ready to follow Up the doughty deeds of the .Dominion soldiers at tho front. Tho men then marched from tho Barracks to tho railway station, headed bv iho Bugle Band of the Boys’ High School, several stirring bugle mar dies being played on tho way. There to a large attendance of citizens along tho line of route, and they gave tho. departing soldiers a hearty farewell. THE ROLL CALL. Following is the list of men comprising the drafts: — MOUNTED. ASHBURTON. The Ashburton draft for tho Thirtyfourth Reinforcements was entertained at the Drill Shod yesterday aitornoon b v the tradespeople occupying tho Somerset Corner Block of business premises. £ The Mayor (Mr R- Galbraith) presided and during the. course ot a bnci speech heartily thanked the men on behalf of the town and district foi i-ho services they were about to render their King and country, and expressed a hope that they would all return safely. Patriotic addresses and words ol advice.and encouragement were given by Siiev G. Frost and Mr H. M. Jones. Hearty cheers wevo given tor tho tradespeople who had provided the refreshments. and after singing ’’God Save the King ” the men headed bv fho Bth (South Canterbury) Regimental Band, marched to tho station, and were loudlv cheered as the train moved off. Committee in the Drill Hall, and brief natriotic snceches were delivered by Mr T ouniiion (chairman' of the lemuka Patriotic Entertainment Committee) and Major Kennedy. \t, 1.30 n.m. the men lined up outside the * halt and, headed by tlio Tcniukn Brass Band, marched to the station, where a largo crowd had assembled' lo bid them farewell. Short snceches were delivored by Mr A. Frew /Mayor of Tcmuka) and Major Kennedy, and on tho call of Mr T. Gunnion three cheers were given for tho departing soldiers as the train steamed out.
