Ho had boon treated at Ilanmer and was brought into the city for an operation. Prior to enlisting Williamsjived at Temuka 'with his mother. Mi C. Wells, of Sumner, is a brother-in-law of the deceased. Tho body will bo taken to Temuka to-day for burial.

There is reason to believe that Corporal C. C. J. Smith, who was reported missing and later by the Board of Inquiry believed to be killed on .Tunc 7, and whoso death certificate has been issued, is still alive, as Mr H. Holland, Waikari, has received word from his

sister in Australia Corporal Smith's father, in S-pglond, had e. eeived a letter from him, i>ntt m a tei the battle of Mcssincs. where he was supposed to have been killed, in which ho stated that ho had been wounded by shrapnel in tho battle. His father reeeived the letter from him on Juno 14. Mrs Richardson, 217 Moorbouso Avenue, has received word from the military authorities that her son, Rifleman Rov G. Richardson, has been invalided home. Rifleman Richardson left New Zealand with the Ninth Reinforcements, and was wounded in tho faco and hand in the Sonimo bnttlo on September 15, 1916. He roturned to the front again, and fell seriously ill with pleurisy in May, 191". Ho was sent to England, and has been in the different hospitals. Since then lie has had leave in London, and has been sightseeing In a letter to his mother lie speaks in appreciative terms of the Salvation Army-Hostel in London, where he stayed some of his time, as well as 'spending somo time in homes of wealthy people by invitation. He also speaks very highly of tho treatment of everybody there, also tho hospitals and staff, saying they cannot do enough for the comfort and care of soldiers. Ilis brother Ivarl is still in tho firing line as a- gunner in the artillery. Letters just received from him stated that ho is keeping in good health. Some little time back he was buried in the trench through a shell exploding, and tho shock caused him to loso his speech. His injuries since then have been through fragments of shell in his neck and elbow' and foot.
