NAVY LEAGUE.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The committee of the Christchurch branch of the Navy League met last eveuing, Mr A. Boyle (president) occupying the chair. There was an attendance of twelve members. The financial statement for the period Juno 6 to July 4, showed receipts £7 6s, expenditure £9 14s 9d, debit balance at Bank of New Zealand £245. lis 7d, unexhausted credit ou overdraft £54 8s sd. The atatement was adopted. The Collector of Customs wrote stating that duty'on the league's emema mm, " It is for England," could not be remitted. The letter was received.

The secretary of the Auckland branch of the Navy League, wrote forwarding suggestions in regard to tho proposed iNavy League Comerenco. Simdar communications were received from the Otago branch and Wellington branch. A proposal by the Auckland branch that a series of questions should first be propounded and placed before branches for consideration, was discussed.

Mr Walton said that in his opinion, the Christchurch branch should formulate remits, forward them to other branches for consideration, and propose a conference to discuss them further. Tho chairman said that certain matters had already been suggested by the Christchurch branch, among them the questions of a New Zealand Navy and the loan of training ships by Britain to New Zealand. Mr H. J. Marriner moved that a subcommittee, consisting of the president, Captain Marciel and Professor Blunt, should be set up to draw up remits, and that a conference should be held in October. - Members expressed the opinion that before the date of, the conference was decided upon time should be given for the views of Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward on naval policy to, be put before the public. Consideration of Mr Marriner's.mo-. tion was deferred till next meeting. Tho matter of communicating with head masters of primary schools with a view to getting support for the John Travers Cornwall Fund, was left in tho hands of Professor Blunt.

The Navy League, London 2 wrote acknowledging the receipt of reports of work done by the brancli, and expressing appreciation of the same. .The letter was received. Mr D. De B. Hovell wrote forwarding a suggestion that ships' boats should bo equipped with mirrors, to enable the occupants to signal for assistance on the heliograph system. The suggestion was referred to the senior naval officer of the Dominion.

The New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Association wrote offering to donate £lO for the purchase of apples for the Navy. The chairman said that owing to shipping difficulties the offer had been regretfully declined. The question of "Navy Day" collections was discussed, and it was decided to hold the collections on Friday, November 2. It was decided to celebrate " Nelson Day" in ♦the usuafcway on October 20, the anniversary falling on October 21, a Sunday. The meeting then terminated.
