SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. Acceptances for the Groat Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, first forfeits for the Champagne Stakes and :Challenge Stakes and nominations to'the minor events at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting are due to-night at nine o'clock.

R. Keav, who broke a leg at the Forburv Park Trotting Club s meeting in January, and who has been laid up in Dunedln ever since, returned home on Tuesday. He has made good, process towards recovery, hut it will he gome time before he is fit for work again. At present he is on crutches.

Judged by the number of local horses that have been nominated for the Waimate Plains Trotting Club, whoso meeting is to bs held at Hawera on Easter Monday,' there is every probability of a good contingent of Canterbury horses making the trip to the north.

The Australian-owned pacer Denver Huon is at present running Cut in the paddock and is looking big and wpll. It is understood that it is not intended to race him again.

The pacer Mandarene is at present out of training and it is not M. Edwards's intention to persevere with the Auckland-owned horse. Mandarene has been in work for a good many seasons and he is not likely to show any improvement.

J. Clarke, who h;:s been associated with M. Edwards's stable for a considerable time, was recently called up in the ballot. He has left New Brighton and is on a. visit to his home in Dunedin, prior to going into camp at Trentham.

Kilkee, Eilflinn and Killard hare arrived from Elderslie, to represent Mr J. B. Reid at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting nest month- They will be under the care of M. Hohbs during their stay at Kiccarton. New York, who raced in Australia last spring, in the colours of the late Mr Carlisle Stndholme, figures'as top weight, with 12st 61b. in the Great Eastern Steeplechase, to be decided at the Onkaporinga meeting, South Australia, on Easter Monday. At most of the suburban courses in Sydney preparations are being made for the early installation of the totalisator. The imported horse Shepherd King, who won the Caulfield Cup this season, has finished his racing career and will take up stud life next season. He, is by Martagon—-St Windeline, by St Simon—Queen of the Spring, by Springfield, so that ho combines some of the most successful lines of the present day.

The death is reported from Queensland of the stallion Corroboree, by Harmonist from Grand Canary, the dam of Trafalgar. He did most of his racing in Victoria and was, a good performer, among his successes being the Caulfield Futurity .Stakes, when he was a six-year-old.' He was a great weightcarrier, and he continued to race till four seasons ago, being then twelve years old.
