"OUR DAY" APPEAL.

CANVASS TO BE CONTINUED

SELF-DENIAL WEEK TO BE HELD.

The executive of the "Our Day" appeal on behalf of the Red Cross Fund met yesterday afternoon; present—Mr J. A. .Flesher (in the chair), Lieuten-ant-Colonel Cresswoll and Messrs A. E. G. Rhodes, P. L. Hallenstein, E. Nordon, W. T. Robinson, J. A. Pannett, G. E. Rhodes, C. T. Nowton and W. B. Fox.

It was reported that the following sums had been collected in the various districts: Akaroa, over £1000; Woolston, £42- 13s; Now Brighton, £212 16s 4d; Loithfiold, £2O; Lyttelton, £32 18s 9d; overseas, £lls. The chairman said that the total amount promised or received was £7693 19s 2d. There were still several districts . which had to send in their amounts collected. The appeal had been successful, but the needs of the Red Cross were increasing, as the recent heavy casualty lists proved. It was suggested that the appeal should bo kept open until nearly tho end of the month. There must be hundreds of men in the city who had not yet subscribed and if the personal canvass were continued these men could be approached. On Mr Nordon's motion rotes of appreciation wjere passed to the New Brighton and Akaroa authorities for the excellent results achieved. On the motion ~of Mr A. E. G. Rhodes it was also decided to pass votes of thanks to tho various district committees, lady helpers and collectors, and all district workers who had helped at tho various stalls and street collections.

It was also decided to express the executive's thanks to the Automobile Association, Messrs Campbell and Chadwick, and the members of the concert party.

Mr Nordo.i reported that at a representative meeting of tho rulers of the Masonic fraternity, held on Monday night, it was decided to make a collection amongst the members of that bodjv the result of which is to be devoted to the "Our Day" Fund., Respecting the Anthony Wilding art union/be reported that the books had been well distributed and that tickets totalling nearly £3O were sold on "Our Day."

The secretary of the Opawa Bowling Club forwarded a cheque for £3 Is, representing the amount subscribed by the members of the club to tho fund on the occasion of the opening of the season.

A letter was received from Dr A. F; J.rMioklo stating that although the workers in connection with the '' ■our Day" collection .on Friday did splendid work, tho results of the day's collection did not reach the figure it should have done. The weather was a big handicap. • He suggested a week of self-denial and effort in order that the fund might reach a suitable amount, say, £20,000. He thought that amount was well within thoir ability, and the sad casualty lists appearing in'the newspapers should act as a powerful stimulant to all to give "what they could. The chairman said that the idea appealed to .him. He had estimated that if tho people of the Dominion did withput one meal, and estimating a meal at 6d, the sum of £300,000 would be available.

Mr Hallenstein said that, owing to the wot weather experienced last Friday, a lot of people expected that a further effort would be made.

The chairman strongly urged that a systematic canvass of the business places should be nindertaken. Mr Nordon moved—" That the suggestion of Dr Mickleibe adopted, and that tho self-denial week bo from October 9 to October 16." Mr Robinson seconded the motion, which was agreed to. It' was further agreed to call a nieeting, of citizens and sympathisers, prepared to assist with the canvass, for Thursday, at the Ambulance Association's rooms. /

It was decided to make a special appeal to each of tho Labour unions.' Mr Robinson asked for the approval of the executive to devoto £SOO of tlie proceeds from the Red Cross sales depot to "Our Day" Fund. Ho said that sinco the depot was opened the total amount received was £6945 6s sd, of which amount £5458 had been paid: in to the Red Cross Fund. They had in hand'£l4B7 6s od. Those connected with the depot felt that the " Our Day" money was urgently needed| hence their desire to vote the £SOO mentioned. Mr A. E. G. Rhodes said that the depot had previously paid in £1938, and with the amount now proposed to be given the total was over £2ooo—a very handsome contribution. The. executive gave its approval and. 'decided to express its thanks to those conducting the depot.
