PRISONERS OF WAR.

THEIR PAY TO CONTINUE. Special regulations defining the position of prisoners of war and interned soldiers as regards pay, etc., havo been adopted by Defence Headquarters. They make the following provisions:- -

1. A soldier shall not forfeit his right to pay during the period of his absence as a prisoner of war unless it shall bo proved before a court of inquiry, convened by order of the General Officer Commanding, that such soldier was taken prisoner through neglect or misconduct on his own part. In that case be shall forfeit any balance or pay unissued to him during the period of imprisonment. ... 2 The issue of pay to a soldier wimo a prisoner of war must depend on circumstances. On rejoining, no further issuo will be made until it has been decided whether a court of inquiry shall be held. If such court is held, and decides that tho soldier was taken prisoner through his own neglect or misconduct, he will forfeit any balance of pay unissued at the date of rejoining. In all otrer cases the unissued balance will bo paid to the man. 3. A soldier who has been a prisoner of war will not be credited messing allowance for the period of his captivity, but those already drawing field allowance will continue to be eligible for it.

4. All issues of pay and field allowance will be subject to adjustment eventuallv in rospectof any pay received by the soldier from the enemy while a prisoner of war. Duo notification will ba given of any alteration in these instructions consequent on any arrangement made with tho enemy Governments.

' 6.- The additional pay of adjutants and all additional and extra duty pay granted for the performance of specifio duties will cease to be issuable from the date on which the soldiers become prisoners of war^ 1

Allotments of pay: Allotments of pay made by a soldier who has been taken prisoner of war will continuo to be issued unless and until it shall be proved before a court of inquiry referred to in section 136, Field Service Regulations, Part 11., that such soldiei was taken prisoner through neglect or misconduct on his own part. The decision on the report of the court of inquiry will be communicated without delay to the Officer in Charge of Records, who will inform the Paymaster paying tho soldier's unit. 7. Separation allowance will continue to bo issued in all cases, irrespective of the opinion of the court of inquiry, until tho soldier is discharged from tho Expeditionary Force. 8. Tho above rules shall also be applicable to Boldiers who.are interned. Tho word "soldier" includes officers.
