"OUR DAY."

RED CROSS APPEAL

ARRANGEMENTS FOR FRIDAY

On Friday tho great Red Cross appeal is to be made. This appeal is not intended to interfere with the Rod Cross work which has been going on steadily since the outbreak of war. In October, 1914. the British Red Cross Society and tho Order of St John co-oporated for war purposes, and in October. 1015, tho first "Our Day" appeal was made. This resulted in £900,000 being added to their funds. Their expenditure, however, on very necessary work in those days was so enormous that tho amount then realised was only sufficient for six months' work. But, with the great offensive, which commenced at the cud of June last, their expenses have increased to such an extent that they spend more in a month now than they realised from the last " Our Day" appeal. This year it is hoped that every man, woman and child will respond nobly and give to their utmost ability for the sake of the brave men who aro lighting and dying for their King and country.

In Christchurch sub-committees aro canvassing for money. Farmers throughout North Canterbury are being asked to donate stock, which auctioneers will sell free of charge. Tho appeal will culminate locally on Friday next, with a street sale of Red Cross badges, and thero will ho a number of tents and stalls in the opon spaces in the city for tho sale or farm and garden produce, imstrj, sweets, articles of every day use, etc. The latest offer of help has come from Mrs Davies, who will supply and conduct a tea tent on one of the lawns in Victoria Square, whero visitors will bo entertained with vocal and instrumental music whilst tea is being served. It is estimated that nearly 500 ladies will be helping on Friday selling badges and attending to tho various stalls. Mr W. B. Fox will bo in charge of a marquee for the sale of produce, etc., in Cathedral Sqiyire. Tho Overseas Club, Roman Catholic Red Cross branch and tho Young Women's Christian Association will have stalls at which a variety of articles may be purchased. Mr Peter Trolovo will have a novelty stall at Messrs Barnett's corner. A specially designed Red Cross badge will be given to every contributor of sixpence or over. It is hoped, however, that people will give as much as ever they can afford.
