ITALY'S CAMPAIGN

FIGHTING FOR TRIESTE.

TOWN'S WATER SUPPLY CUT OFF.

Australian and N. 4. Cable Association. ROME, September 25. The Italians have cut off the Trieste rater supply.

THE NORTHERN FRONT.

ITALIAN SUCCESSES.

(Received September 26, 5.50 p.m.) ROME, September 25.

An Italian communique says:—There is increased enemy artillery activity on the Trentino front. We captured the summit of Mount Garuinai, eight thousand feet, north-east of Mount Cauriol.

IMPORTANT SUCCESSES.

(Received September 26, 8.25 p.m.) ROME, September 26.

A semi-official mesago says that the capture of the summit of Cardinal is another *tep in the sure, systematic advance along rough, precipitous ridges between tho Astico, Travignolo and tho Upper Cismon valleys. The recently captured posit.ons on tho Rollo ;uid Colbricon passes and Mount- Cauriol and other points of this barrier lead to the principal peaks, such as Cardinal. The value of tho gradual occupation of this massive outwork arises from tho fact that it commands the Dolomite road connecting'the , Trentino and Cadore. That it is a serious menace to the lines of communication along the road traversing Cavaleae to the Bozen-Trent railway is shown by the nujuber of Austrian troops concentrated in this region, to which new units and new batteries are continually being added. There are now several divisions of the best Austrian troops in readiness strongly to oppose any advance. A few months ago the region was defended by only a few battalions. The advance cortinues steadily, despite the increase in the enemy's forces and tho obstinacy of the resistance.

AUSTRIA'S VERSION.

(Received September 26, 8.25 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, September 26. An Austrian communique says:—• Two alpine attacks on Cardinal were bloodily repulsed.
