China 'has replied to the Japanesr Note on the Cheng Chiatung affair, but the contents of the Note are not disclosed. It is believed that Japan is dissatisfied with the reply. AMERICA'S INQUIRY. Australian and N.Z. Cal le Association. WASHINGTON, September 12. Mr George W. Guthrie, American Ambassador to Jnpan, was instructed ou September 6 to ask Japan for a statement, and to inform the Japanese Foreign Office that the first Press reports of the Japanese demands on China had greatly disturbed tho Americai. Government, which trusted that they were untrue. The Japanese Foreign Minister replied that some of the Press reports were approximately true and that others were a coloured mixture of untruth and exaggeration.
