Canon Knowles was a man of sterling character, and of considerable ability in ecclesiastical administration, possessing a very full and complete knowledge of the church history of tho dioceso. Having been one of the pioneer settlers of Canterbury, Canon Knowles had an intimate knowledge of church matters from the beginning of the Canterbury Province, which entitled him to be regarded as an authority on such matters in later administration. His close official connection with the Church Property Trust estates enabled him to give invaluable assistance readily in all matters affecting tho business of these estates. His office in the church was no 'sinecure. Throughout his long official period, and up to recent years, he was widely known throughout the diocese as a willing helper on Sundays in taking tlio duties of invalided clergymen—no' light addition to his work in the diocesan offices during the week. His courteous manner and prompt business aptitude were marked features in his relations with clergy and laity alike. Tho warm appreciation of tho late Canon by church people especially was feelingly expressed by the Bishop at ihe meeting of the Standing Committee on Tuesday evening, when a resolution was passed expressive of sympathy with the Canon’s family, and of the high esteem and sincere regard in which the committee, ns representative of the church in this diocese, cherishes the memory of so useful and laithful a servant of Christ.
