ADVANCE CONTINUES. HUNGARIANS TAKEN BY SURPRISE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. ROME, September 1. A Bucharest wireless message says that the Rumanian nrmy on the evening of the declaration of war was ready to take up positions. It crossed the Carpathian crests frcrn Bukowina to th© Danube with a single bound and made attacks from Wallachia northwards to' Moldavia. Westwards the principal operations are in Wallachia, whence three important attaclcs were made in the valleys of the Jic, Alt and Prakova. The army was momentarily held in check nt Orsova, on the extreme left front, but in the past two days has crossed the entire Orsova zone, following the lino of the Danube. The attack on the Moldavian side has been appreciably extended in the directions of Grymes and Pal an k a and Oitu z to the extreme north of this line. The Rumanians on tho first day functioned with General. Lechitsky’s troops. This general attack enabled an advance on Wednesday of twenty-five miles along almost tho entire front.

The greatest advance was in the direction of Herraannstadfc and the rapidity of ■ the advance broke down Humorous successive defence lines, enabling tho ammunition depots to bo captured. Tho Hungarians since the war began had powerfully fortified this elevated zone. Tho advance continues.

Frankfurt reports state that 50,000 Germans arrived at Klausenburg, and that the Austrians evacuated Maros Vasarhely. (Klausenburg is seventy miles northwest and Maros Vasarhely is sixty miles north of Hermannstadt.) ENEMY EXPLANATIONS. WITHDRAWAL FROM TRANSYLVANIA. NEW. YORK, September 1. Commenting on the withdrawal from the Kronstadt Valley, the “ Tageblatt” says: “The loss of the city is painfully felt in Hungary, but the loss is not final." RUMANIA’S ARMIES. THREE MAIN FORCES. PARIS, September 1. Two Rumanian armies are operating in Transylvania. The first, called the Moldavian Army is under General Cottescu. It has crossed the Palanka Pass and constitutes the right wing. It has already functioned with the Russians. The seepnd, or Wallachian Army, under General Goanda, a military specialist, undertook a lightning oflensivo against the Austrians. It has crossed the Predcal and Red Tower Passes, aiming at Brasso and Hermannstadt. The third army,' under General Averescu, aims at the Banat of Temesvaf. It is expected to march via Verciorovo and the Jioiol valley. Meanwhile the southern frontier is guarded in anticipation of the Bulgarians’ declaration of war.

A wireless riessage says that Hungary is arming all citizens irrespective of age. i A hundred thousand fugitives from Transylvania are invading Hungary, where there is general alarm at the rapidity of tho Rumanian advance. The weakness" of Hungary's defences has already lost all tho principal Transylvanian towns and alpine passes.

RUSHING UP TROOPS
