ASHBURTON.

A bf.z&ar and sale of work was opened in tho mission hail of the Church of Christ at Ashburton yesterday afternoon, m aid of too church building fund. There was a largo attendance. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr F. hernm<i»n) declared- tho calo open. At the cottclueion of the opening ceremony, tho pastor, Mr Breton Jarvis, presented Mr Fernman, on behalf of the Sisters’ Sewing Guild, with a huge cake, to be handed over to the Lady Liverpool dapot in Ashburton. .Under the supervision of Mrs Ki'gour, president of the Bazaar Committee, the arrangements wero well carried out. The stallholders wcto as follow: —Refreshment, Mesdames Rands ond Kilgcmr; fancy work, Mrs A. J. Tvroll-B-ax-ter and Miss C. Dale; plain sowing, Mre> \V Olr-en and Mrs J. Readhead; cake stall, Mias J Moodie; sweets, Misa H. Williams; cioll eta!!, Misses F. Knox and E. Harvey ; produce M”s J. Olsen; post office, stationery, etc..’Miss Terza Williams; flowers, Mr J. Soott; Christmas tree, Mrs Mathieson. During the afternoon good business was done. The Kilo will be continued until Saturday evening. BELFAST. On Tuesdav overling, L.O.L. No. 4, Belfast, hold itsf annual social in the Town Hall. The attendance was a record one. Advantage was taken of tho ocoasion to present Private b. Wilson, who ia on fin&l lc&vo, i/ith a .ic-art and lung protector. Mr E. J. k\ otton, on behalf of the reaidents of Bolfast, made the presentation, -and apologised for the absence of the chairman of the Send-off Committee, Mr W. Nicholls. Mr J. Johns delivered a short -address. WOODEND. A very largo gathering assembled in tho Woodend Town Hal! on Wednesday evening, at a farewell social tendered to Privates Moody and M’Conuidie. The Rev J. R. Clark presided, and drew attention to the fact that both men were married men with families, and therefore wer dserving of mor praiso for offering their servioes to the Empire. The Hon D. Buddo deliverd a patriotic addrsa, end musical and elocutionary items were contributed by Misses Edeir, Benson, Borland and Branton, and Messrs A. Judson and L. Sheppard. On behalf of the residents in tho district, tho chairman prerented each soldier with a- waleit, a fountain pen and a silver match-box.
