ASHBURTON FATALITY

ELDERLY MAN RUN OVER BY

RAILWAY ENGINE,

A terrible railway fatality occurred at Ashburton Railway Station about 8.45 a.m. yesterday, the victim being a man named John Suffield, seventy-five years of age. Suffield was very deaf, and as lie was crossing the lino he stepped behind a truck, when lie was run over by a shunting engine and literally cut to pieces. The body was removed to the hospital morgue. An inquest was opened last evening beforo Mr V. G. Day, Coroner, but was adjourned until August 25. Mr Suffield was well known in Christchurch, where he arrived about fifty vears ago. He was a saddler by trade, and for°about three years had been living in Ashburton, where ho was very highly respected.
