Sensational details are received of the Cheng Chiatim affray. Chinese soldiers assaulted a Japanese, whereupon the only Japanese policeman in Cheng Ohiatun went to the barracks and remonstrated. He was shot at and killed by a Chinese soldier, and subsequently a squad of Japanese troop 3 approachod the barracks. The Chinese fired, wounding seventeen. The newspapers assert that Chinese mobs are threatening a hundred Japanese residents at Chong Chiatun.

An official message says:— Encounters between Japanese and Qhineae at Cheng Chiatun continued throughout tho night of August 13. The Governor of Mukden, on receiving the report, ordered the Chinese to cease fighting. He then visited the Japanese Consul and expressed his deepest regret.
