THE NINETEENTHS. CANTERBURY DISTRICT QUOTA. REDUCTION. IN INFANTRY. Tho Canterbury military district quota for the Nineteenth Reinforcements, to co into camp at tho end of tho present month, -will consist of 48G men, or 44 levy* than tho quota for the Eighteenth Reinforcements, which went into camp considerably over strength. Tliis time tho district will send forward only tho exact number of men called for. The principal reduction is in the infantry, for which 425 men aro required instead of the 463 required for the precedmc. dnift.. There is no change in the district quotas for mounted riflosf, artillery and ambulance, hut there is an increase of three in tho engineers. POSITION IN EYRE COUNTY. At the meeting of tho Eyre County Council on Monday, it was reported that a careful canvass had been made throughout the county of men of military age, and the following particulars had been obtained:— Single, willing to go at fourteen tlavs' notice . ~ .10 Rejects . . . . . . 22 Single, with various excuses . . 81 Married men of military age , . 142 Total . . . ■ . . . 255 ASHBURTON CAMPAIGN CLOSED; At a meeting of tho Ashburton County Council Recruiting Board held yesterday, tho chairman (Mr C. J. Harper) reported that 28.6 new names hod been added to the roll, making n total of 2240. The canvassers reported on 1889 men in the county, and stated there were still 23-1 men to bo interviewed. Tho cost of canvassing to Juno 31 had amounted to £193 19s 6d. The cha.irman said that the men yet to-be canvassed included shepherds in tho backblocks, who were difficult to get at. It was decided to close the canvass, and to write to tho Government stating that the council had done its best to make tho canvass as complete.as possible. It was also decided to ask the Government to refund the money expended in connection with the canvass.
