Saturday was Sailors Day, ’ 1 the workers in connection with the Lady Liverpool Fund and the Red Cross Society at Ashburton assisted by a large number of young ladies taking up a collection ■on tlie streets. The time was very opportune being the second day of the winter show in connection with the Poultry Society and there was a large number of country visitors iu town. During the day canvassers were busy selling badges and their united efforts resulted in the collection of £246 towards the dependants of the sailors who lost their lives in the recent naval battle. It is more than probable tliat tlie Ashburton Red Cross Society will supplement this sum with a substantial donation. The amount collected on Saturday together with donations previously made brings the Ashburton fund up to £1251, in addition to £125 5s which has been subscribed in the Methvcn district. A FIELDING COLLECTION. [Per Press Association.] FEILDING, Juno 17. Street and other collections yesterday for the widows and orphans of the men lost in the Jutland naval fight, totalled £IOOO.
