SPORTING.

NEAYS AND NOTES. The Australian campaign undertaken by the Hawke’s Bay sportsman, Mr F. Armstrong, has had a tragic termination. Tlie steeplechaser, Morning, the star member of the team, contracted pleurisy and died last week, just after his arrival in Melbourne, hollowing closely on the death of Morning came nows from Melbourne that Arthui Goodwin, who went over in charge of Mr Armstrong’s horses, had died, meningitis being understood to bo the cause. The announcement will cause widespread regret throughout the Dominion, as deceased had a wide circlo of friends. Goodwin had' been associated with racing for many years, chieflv in the Hawke’s Bay district. He w r as for a time head lad to D. Mu mi, when the latter was training the late Mr AV. Douglas’s horses. He Blackberry when lie won the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase in 1899. Later Goodwin was engaged as private trainer to Mr T. H. Loivry, at the period when that sportsman had the jumpers Creusot and Comfort-, as well as several useful performers on the flat, including Madrigal and Bose Madder. Following that he took service under Mr F. Armstrong, whose horses ho had trained during tho last few years. Information regarding Goodwin’s illness reached Mr Armstrong in the middle of last week, and A. J. Shear.shy, who trains some of his flat racers at Awapiini, left AYcllington on Thursday to take charge, of the team in Australia. It is probable that Sleight of Hand and The Hound will return home without racing. Sleight of Hand having already been scratched for all engagements at tho ATotoria Racing Club’s Grand National meeting. Though nothing has been definitely settled yet, it is probable that Mr G. D. Greenwood will be represented at the spring meeting of tho Australian Jockey Club. Tho plans will probably depend, however, on the Juvenile members of the team. With a view to getting a. line as early ns possible, R. J. Mason is now doing some strong work with the yearlings Biplane (Comedy King—Air Motor) and Lovesick (Martian —Lovelorn). They were sprinted in company on Saturday, when botli of them shaped attractively. AA*. M’Donald has taken Moddite and Meltchikoff in hand again. They have not been out in tho mornings, hut are worked each afternoon, in company with Snmicl and Marabout, tho lastnamed a recent addition to the team. She is a two-year-old filly by Elysiati— Laciv Given, and is owned by Air H. R. M'Kenzie, of Auckland, for whom M’Donald is also training a yearling brother to his latest acquisition. Marabout is a useful galloper, who should pay her way next, season.

The two-vear-old colt Desperado, by Sail Francisco —Bravo Heart-, was recently purchased from Sir George Clifford by Air H. Tinker, who has since disposed ot the colt to tho Auckland sportsman. Air LI. S. AVilson. perado will be shipped north on AV ednesday.

Hap Dha (L. Hagerty). and Daylight Bill’s sister (AY. Scobic) wero schooled together over four hurdles on Saturday. Hap Dha jumped tho first hurdle well, but his companion blundered over it. Tho next two obstacles ivero negotiated in good style, but Hap Dha- go into tho last one, though he cleared it without mishap.

Kilmenv 'A. ftnald) and Alescal (AV. Scobic) si ; • ni Saturday for a turn over tiie - . base fences. I lc > jumped the bli.d: 1U front of the stand all right, when Daylight Bill (D. Andeisoii) joined in to give them a lead up the back. Alescal refused at the second of the double, and was only got oyer when Daylight Bill returned' to give him a lead, after jumping the sod wa l, at- which Kilmeny ran off. Alescal subsequent ly refused at tho sod wall, wncie Kilmenv ran off each time, but Mescal finally cleared it. The pair then went on again. Alescal getting over the bush fairlv well, while Kilmcnev once more ran off. It was a very unsatistactorj effort all round, Kilmeny’s dislike to the fences being particularly marked. Sport (L. Hagerty) and Banian (D. Jl’Kay) jumped two hurdles on Satiuday, 'giving a good exhibition. A M’Aulay has handled the Austra-lian-bred yearling by Flavus—Laci'y Content, and he will bo ridden in afew days. He is an attractive-looking colt, and promises to be useful. ' A good-looking yearling filly by Boni-form—-Grand Rain, dam of Kilrain, has just been broken in by A. M’Aulay. The yearling filly by Kilbroney— Orange "Pippin, in Al’Aulny’s stable, is a daily visitor to the tracks and is nowgetting through useful tasks, though she has done no fast work yet.

Tho two-year-old filly Furling and the imported filly Henriette, by Henry the First—Alinnie Orme, have joined A. Al’Aulay’s active division.

Snub, Disdainful, AYardancer and Glentanner, who have been on the easy list since Easter, will he taken in hand again this week, and _ will soon ho in active commission in view of spring engagements.

\Y. H. Thomson intends to take Alarc Anthony in hand again shortly. Tho Vareo colt has thickened out a lot during his rest and he is in nice order to commence a preparation for spring racing.

The four-year-old gelding Aloulu, by Boniform—Ormolu, was sold recently by Mr G I/. Stead, and ho is now tin inmate of A. Hall’s stable at AVanganni. He is being schooled with a view to hurdle racing.

Air AV. G. Stead was negotiating recently for the yearling sister to S»sanof. hv Martian—Ukraine, but the price offered, 150 guineas, was not sufficient to tempt her breeder, Air T. AI. Wilford, to sell.

The AYcllington light-weight jockey. Ashley Reed, enlisted last week, but failed to pass the medical test.

Chakwana is in steady at Trentham, but as she lias dene wo wm-lc yet. it looks as if the Hierarch mare would not he wanted Tor racing till the spring meetings. |

It is probable that T. F. Quinlivan will leave early in August for Sydney, taking several' horses, with a view to racing at the Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting and other fixtures in the Commonwealth. As far as present arrangements go the team will consist of Air E. J. Watt’s Blackall and Mr AV. G. Stead's Eligible, Sasanof, Sweet Corn. Gold Painting, Shrill and Slielloma.
