WORK AT THE FRONT

The annual meeting of the National Committee of the Young Men's Christian Association was. held in Christchurch on Saturday. The representatives present included : —Messrs >y. H. George, J>. Ewcn, C. R. Smith, A. Warner (Wellington), E. M. It. llyan (Trentharn), 1 S. W. Parsonson (Featherston), S. G. Cresswell (Mnstorton), H. R. "Wilkinson, It. S. Gray and Gv W. W. 13. Hughes (Dunedin), and Messrs W. G. J&iuieson (national chairman), -John J- Royds William Goss (honorary secretary), 1. C. Field, J. 8. Wilson, 13. C. Brownell (acting national secretary), and \\. K. Taylor, TAS. Tankard and W.. R. Hughes (Christcimrch). The morning session was given over to tlic national chairman, Mr W. G. Jamivson, and Mr W. H. George, who have been to Egypt at their own expense; to act as commissioners in looking after New Zealand's interests in welfare work among the New Zealand troops. Mr George displayed some lantern plates and some films of moving Pictures of the work in Egypt and at GallipoH. which ho had brought home with him. During the afternoon matters ot import were discussed ill connection with this great and growing work, m vi°w of the problems and increasing responsibilities which have arisen in connection with the activities of the, association among the New Zealand, troops in Egvnt and in France. vn° important matter decided was the selection of a commission cf business men to go at their own expense to France to act as Commissioners tor the National Executive in the work of the association* anion- the New Zealand troops. , . , , The treasurer was authorised to remit to France. £SOOO in addition to £3OOO recently sent for hutments and hostel. Six additional secretaries will also be sent in answer to an appeal from the British National Council, for more men. . It was resolved to adopt a policy ol furnishing a hutment if possible for every 2000 Now Zealand men at the front. Three hutments have already been promised, the last one from the Wairarapa Patriotic Committee, which will not onlv pay for a largo hut but will finance a secretary to be placed in charge, guaranteeing all of the necessary expenses through the Y.M.C.A. National Committee. The hut will ho known as the Wairarapa Hut,, and Mr S V Parsonson, who has been the secretarv of the Y.M.C.A. building at Featherston, will be sent by the National Committee to supervise the work. lit Mr Frank Milner, president of the Waitawi Boys' High School, ot Oamaru, and Mayor J- B. MKinlay, of Lawrence, were elected members of the National Committee. The balance-sheet, which was adopted showed receipts, including donations and collections, £6012 15s id, raid expenditure, including over £4OOO remitted to Egypt, £5501 los Id, leavino- a credit balance of £oll 0s 3d. fhe treasurer's report was approved, and it was decided that at least £SO 000 would be necessary to finance the'larger war work contemplated for the coming year, for which contributions can "be sent to Mr John I.
