THE LATE SERGEANT IRVINE.

PHOTOG R APH L XVEILED.

After tin inspection parade of the No. 4 Company cf the New Zealand Garrison Artillery at Lyttdton last evening Colonel C. J. Cooper, commander of the Coastal Defence Forces, took the opportunity to unveil an enlarged photograph of SergcaniS P. K. Irvine, who died whilst fighting at Gallipoli in May, 1915.

Colonel Cooper said he looked upon it as an honour to unveil a memorial to tin old comrade. Sergeant Irvine had been associated with the garrison artillery since tho early days of the Territorial scheme, and he had maintained his interest in tho company until ho volunteered for service abroad. Many letters had been received of his gcod Tvork at the front., and fie was pleased to know that the old traditions of Lyttelton had been upheld. The function that night was to do honour to a young man who gave up his life for the Empire. The time was now surely coming for still further sacrifice. New Zealand had done much on Gallipoli—and so had the •29th British Division. Now the New Zealanders wero in France and would again have the opportunity to prove, their mettle. ;< I am pleased to .see," said Colonel Cooper, in conclusion, "that one of our old comrades had done his job bravely and well. I knew all old boys will do tho same. Then again boys, surely it is a groat honour to find in the birthday honours the name of Sergeant IT. Rhine!, of Lyttelton, who won his D.CM, There are still more men to go but 1 trust they will do their duty faithfully/' Major J. P. E. Veale said that their late comrade was one cf the first throe of the company to offer his services for the Main Expeditionary Force. He was so keen to go that he went into the ranks and by his earnestness and desire for duty he rose to the rank of corporal, subsequently gaining his sergeant's stripes'by his good work on Gallipoli.
