SIR J- W.-HACKETT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received February 20, 5.5 p.m.) PERTH, February 20. The death of Sir John Winthrog Hackett is announced.
(Sir John W T inthrop Hackfitt, K C M G., was horn in Ireland in 1848,. and was educated at Trinity College,, Dublin. He was called to the Irish, Bar in 1874, and shortly after went to Australia. He was sub-warden to Trinitv College. Melbourne, from 1876 to 1882. and he was a member of the Bar in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. In 1882 he pro-, ceeded to Western Australia and was nominated to the Legislative Council by the first- Ministry in Western Australia in 1890. He was a member of| the Federation Convention in Sydney; in 1891, and of the Convention in! 1897-8 which formed the Common-] wealth Constitution. He declined a| knighthood in 1902. but was knighted! nine years later. was and! proprietor of the "West Australian and "Western Mail." Be was a pro-'; minent Freemason, and he took a lead-j ing part in educational matters in • Western Australia, being the first I Chancellor of the University in 1912.) d
