RIVER BANK CARNIVAL.

CANVAS VILLAGE ESTABLISHED, MANY ATTRACTIONS ARRANGED.

Twenty acres of land, three-quarters of a mile of tents, and £SOO worth of reticulating water-pipes represent in bald figures the scale on which the river bank carnival on Anniversary Day will be held 1 . The site of the International Exhibition in Hagley Park once more is a busy scene, with all manner of men working hard all day long preparing for the occasion. Most of tho tents have been erected. One of them, the rose tent, which will bo brilliant with thousands of blooms on. Thursday, « 200 ft long and 37ft wide, and is claimed to be tho largest tent over erected in New Zealand. The lakes and the Elantations and trees and shrubs aro oing brought into tho scheme, and will help to make tho carnival beautiful At night, the whole sceiio will bo lighted by electricity. Mr E. E. Stark, tho City Council's electrical engineer, and wiremen from the council's staff and the staffs of wiring firms, are preparing for the electrical display. They will place 150 lamps .in the tents, from 100 to 150 candle-power each, and forty-five lamps in open places, ranging from 80 to 100 oandle-power each. In one of the tents the City Council's electrical appliances will bo demonstrated by Mr Stark with many novel and beautiful fleviecs.

Up to the present time 14,000 admission tickets, without the art union tickets, have been sold in connection with the churches; 10,000 art union tickets have 'been issued, and 20,000 more will bo issued soon. The programme of sports and other competitions has been arranged, and fresh attractions are promised.
