CAMPAIGN AT RANGTORA

OPEN-AIR MEETING

The recruiting campaign was continued at Rangiora on Saturday evening, another open-air meeting being held at Johnston's corner. There was a large audience, a considerable proportion of which was composed of young men eligible for service The speakers were the Mayor (Mr C. I. Jennings), Mr F. Horrell, chairman of the Sty Council, the Hon D. Buddo wd Councillor W. Rouse,, each of wbomd* his best to impress oil the young men the gravity of the situation in the South Island in regard to recruiting for the Eleventh Reinforcements, and their bouuden duty to give their services to support the brave troops doing then part so splendidly at the front. Mr C. W. Hcrvey, secretary of the Recruiting Board, and Mr V . K-. Climio, a member of the organisation, were also present. The former in a brief address explained the objects of the board, and stated.that it was proposed to form local branches in all centres, the executives of which would be called upon to make organised efforts to stimulate recruiting in their immediate neighbourhoods. The Mayor announced that Mr C. U Paterson had been appointed district recruiting officer for the Rangiora district, and recruits needing his services would receive prompt attention. He also stated that recruits over 12st in weight would now be received for the infantry, tho weight bar of 12st only applying to mounted men. Lieutenant C. E. Bell, of the Pangiora Territorials, mounted the stand, and after drawing attention to the tact of there being in his oompany at the present time over thirty men fit for service who had not enlisted, made the offer to sign on with them if they would take the step. The meeting then ended with cheers for the men at the front, and for those who are going, and singing the National Anthem. i
