Thanks to the enterprise of a few bowling enthusiasts and the assistance of the municipality, a green has been laid out in Oxford Street, Lyttelton, on the site occupied for many years by a number of dilapidated buildings. The green, which ha s a frontage of 102 ft on Oxford Street, extends back to Donald Street, and the playing area —90ft by 94ft—provides accommodation for six rinks. The ground is enclosed by a wall of red stone, the main entrance being on Oxford Street. At the roar of the ground and on an elevated position, a neatly-designed pavilion, measuring 34ft x 21ft, has been erected. On the ground also are fourjsieces of statuary, representing Jack iftfchn■on, Mis Pankhurst, .the Duko of Wellington and Sir Francis Drake. The figures were carved out of solid red stone by a prisoner. AH told the green-and buildings cost about i'63o. The new green was opened on Saturday aflomcon. There was a large attendance, including many ladies and visitors from tho city and suburban clubs. In declaring the green open for play, the presidont, Mr J. T. Norton, complimented members on the success that had attended their efforts. He trusted that before long the club would be able to take part, in the various competitions, aud also be the means of fostering the sport. Mr J. C. Scanlon unveiled tho statuary, Mec-dames G. C.
