PUBLIC SERVICE

HOSPITAL BRANCH.

A meeting of tho North Canterbury Hospital and Cliaritablo Aid Board’s staff, other than medical and nursing, was hold in the board’s office on Wednesday, to discuss matters relating to tho Queen Carnival. After hearing an address by Mr Knox, the Public Service group secretary, it was decided to ionn a section of tho Public Sendee group. Mr W. S. Wharton was elected chairman, Miss W. R. Norris secretary, and Miss Wilis and Messrs Harrop, Loughton, Rankm and Warsaw were appointed a committee. , , At a meeting of the committee subsequently, Messrs Wharton and _S. Rankin were appointed representatives on the executive.

WHOLESALE AND RETAIL.

HARDWARE BRANCH.

The employees of tho hardware and machinery merchants, comprising a branch of the wholesale and retail section of the Queen Carnival, held a meeting last evening, 'iliero was a good attendance. The objects of tho movement were fully explained by Messrs S. A. Orchard (chairman of tho executive committoe), W. Morley and W. Bull.

A committee comprising two representatives from each firm was set up to interview the various staffs and to report progress at a further meeting. Afr T. E. Clayton was appointed chairman and Air S. AL Stuart honorary secretary.. A resolution affirming th© proposal of thei chairman of tho executive committee that the fund should be built up bv difrect contributions was carried unanimously.

COAIAIERCE AND PROFESSIONS,

' AUCTIONEERS’ BRANCH. A mcoting of representatives of thei auctioneers and land agents and the meat industry, which comprise a branch of the Commerce and Professions section of tho Queen Carnival, was held in the Art Gallery last evening. Mr H. S. Bourn presided over a good attendance.

The following executive was elcctod: —Messrs H. W. Jennings (chairman), E. J. Tayler (secretary), X. L. Al’Beth, R. Hennah, P. L. Davies, E. G. Rawnsley, F. Borthwick, J. Marshall, H. Laurenson and W. D. Stewart.

Several members spoke in favour of the method of raising money by means of a. carnival, stating that funds should bo obtained in every legitimate way, and that voluntary subscriptions wourd not bring in. the sum required.

On tho motion of Air Hennah it was unanimously decided that money should be liaised by every possible legitimate means, in order to place the section’s queen at the head of the poll. It was decided that the land agents, auctioneers and representatives of the meat industry should appoint delegates to represent them on the executive, and Messrs Hennah, Stewart and M’Beth were elected. Air Stewart suggested that sub-sec-tions representing land buyers, live stock buyers, wool buyers and others should bo formed, and that each subsection should have, a princess for whom it could work, th© princess who headed the poll to be queen of the section.

Air Bourn said that each worker in the Professions and Commerce section would bp supplied with a- small badg|o bearing the letters “ P.C.”

SOLDIERS’ QUEEN.

DEFENCE BRANCH

A meeting was held at the Officers’ Club rooms, King Edward Barracks, last evening, for tlie purpose of forming a sub-sectional committee representing the Defence. Territorials, and Cadets branches of the military service in connection with .the Canterbury Queen Carnival. Mr TV. W. Charters (chairman) and Captain M’Gee (secretary) of the Militury Section were in attendance. A sub-section was formed, Colonel G. J. Smith being appointed chninnan and Lieutenant Lucas secretary, and a committee was set up consisting of all officers of the Christchurch Garrison, together with four representatives: from each company (non-commissioned officers or men).

It was decided to urge all members of the. forces to support the candidature of the Soldiers’ Queen, and to avoid pledging themselves to support other candidates.
