NEWS AND NOTES

11. Cutts, with Battle Eve and C4ood Hope, and P- M'Grath, with Thcstius, left for Trontham on Monday night to fulfil engagements at tho Wellington Racing Club's meeting. R. J. Mason took Nones and Thames north last tiittht; while R. Longley, with Bee. and F. Christmas, with Slogan, will follow to-morrow.

Mr J. B. Reid's two-year-old colts, Kilhrogan and Kilkce, who claimed engagements At tho WMUngton Racing Club's spring meeting, will not make the trip "to Trentham.

The injuries sustained by Bonsign while running in the paddock last week proved less serious than at first anticipated. She appears.to he all neht again and will make the trip to the West Coast for the Greymouth Jockey Club's meeting next week.

Tho two-year-old filly Disdainful, who has been on the easy list since she returned from the Dunedm meeting, made her reappearance on the track vester-day, when she was given mild Exercise ' The break in her preparation must prejudice her prospects in the Welcome Stakes.

Wardancer, the two-year-old brother to Warstop. met with slight injuries while playing in the paddock a few days aco He is now having a .short rest, following on a doso of physic. A start has been made with a number of improvements at the New Brighton Trotting Club's course. The old stewards' stand has disappeared, and wil be replaced by an up-to-date structure, with ample accommodation for all the necessary offices. The new stand will be placed on a slipper foundation, to permit its removal, later on, to another site, as extensive alterations are contemplated at an eaily date. Tho two-year-old' colt Peter Bell, by Petereta-Wild Belle, has created a very favourable impression among the experts who have seen him. work at Aldington, tho general being that he is a trotter with a great future. He is a big fellow, and he is not to be unduly hurried. In the meantime,. Mr F. Hickinbottom has cided to have him gelded, and he will DP given a good spell before being set any severe tasks on tho track. Since ho decided to give Huon Drift a spell, Mr R. J. Munro has been approached by the owners of . several mares with a view to securing the horse's services. As a result it has been decided to give the son of Driftwood—Elsa Huon a light stud season before putting him into work again. Huon Drift is a perfectly garbed pacer and a groat stayer, two qualifications which have doubtless caused attention to be drawn to him.

Kola Nut.' who has a colt foal at foot by Driftwood, will be* mated this season' with "Wildwood Junior. Her owner appears to be working on sound lines in breeding the maro to Wildwood horses, as he secuTed King Cole as a result of mating her with Ribbonwooa. The North Canterbury and Oxford Jockey Club appears to have selected a very suitable date far its first totalisator meeting. If the list of nominations can be accepted as a fair indication of the number of horses who will be racing, there will bo large fields at Rangiora on Thursday, October 28. Every event on the programme has filled" well, and in addition to representatives from most of the local stables, the meeting has attracted several North Island horses, including Eligible, Tatterley, Sweet Com, Ceylon an! Rose Pink. It is quite on the cards that this meeting will eventually develop into an important fix turn Held ten days'before New Zealand Cup day, and within such handy reach of Christchurch, there is no MW.W it should not attract many of the best hoiSs, Who could, with of trouble, bo given a race before taking ori tfaSr more important engagements at Riccarton.
