A POPULAR OFFICER.

FAREWELL TO LIEUTENANT MARRIOTT AT FEND ALTON.

A pleasant function was held at St Barnaba-s's Schoolroom, Fendalton, last evening, when the residents of the district and the Senior and Junior Cadets held a farewell social in honour of Lieutenant W. J. Marriott, who is leaving for the front early in June. The hall was well Idled. The vicar, Canon T. Hamilton, presided. The chairman said that the large gathering was a testimonial to the work and the worth of Lieutenant Marriott. For the past seven years he had worked unfailingly on behalf of the youth of the district a,nd between tliree and four hundred boys bad »een under his care altogether!-. He hmtt commenced his activities with TTi& Boy Scout movement, and had formed a troop in 1008. When the Senior Cadets were started Lieutenant Marriott had been appointed to the command of the Fendalton Company. In addition to his work with the Senior Cadets, he had also formed a company of Junior Cadets for younger boys. The residents of Fendalton fully appreciated what, Lieutenant Marriott had dono arid wished him God-speed and a safe return. (Applause."} Canon Hamilton then presented Lieutenant Marriott with a purse of sovereigns and a pair of binoculars from the residents and Senior Cadets, and a wallet from the local branch of the C E.M.S.

Sergeant-Majoi- Harper, of the Junior Cadets, a lad about twelve years of age, then read an address to 'Lieutenant Marriott from tho members of tho company, and presented him with a fountain pen and largo box of chocolate.

Lieutenant Marriott briefly replied. Hearty cheers were given for the guest and the audience sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." During the evening items were given by Misses Brown. Claridge ** and Michael, Messrs O. Rhodda, W. Smith, S. Jameson, W. Seymour and Master F. Seymour.
