CLYDESDALE HORSE SOCIETY,

MEETING* AT DUNEDIN.

A meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the Council of the Clydesdale Horse Society was held in the society's office, Crawford Street, Dunedin, on Thursday; present—Mr James Cow, vfoe-president (in the chair) and Messrs W. J. J. Charters and J. A. Johnstone.

The prefix " Dunuro," applied for by a member, was hot granted. Notice of awards of affiliation medals were received from- Kelso A. and P. Association, won by James A. Jenkins; Egmont A. and P. Association, Ha■wera, won by M. J. Goodson; Southland Metropolitan A. and P. Association, Invercargill, medal #'or best colt, won by Robert Kennedy, Drummond, and fox best fffiy, won by Walter Blakie, Royal Bush; Tapanui Farmers' Club, bronze medal; won by James A. Jenkins; Feilding Industrial A. and P. Association, Feilding, silver medal, won T>v Peter M'Naughton, Patea; Wyndham A. and P. Association, won bv' Johnstone Wyllle, Edendale. The secretary stated that a number of awards had no* yet been made ! known. On receipt ot information .of these the order for the medals would be sent Home.

Accounts amounting to £l2O were passed for payment. It was decided that the next meeting of the council should be held in Feilding on May 19.

KILLINCHY. , Owing to the continued dry • spell farmers are almost at their wits' end to keep their stook going. Already several paddocks of turnips have been eaten off, tho leaves having a withered appearance. Oldy in gullies and low places has tho turnip crop come to anything. The dry autumn ha*; had the effect ot seeing a large area, of twitch killed; the chain harrow has been usad to good effect. A good ram is now needed to enable deep ploughing to b« gone on with. V'"; Owing to the Killinchy Presbyterian Sabbath School not holding the usual social this year, on Sunday last prize* were given to every soholar. A musical and elocutionary programme was carried out, and the Rev \V. -G; Blair ga-ve an address on the importance of Sunday school. work. _ Tho Ashburton Bowling Club closed its season on the Domain green on Saturday afternoon, when about thirtysix members took part in a match. The president of the club (Mr P. Stewart) provided aftornoon lea, and declared the season closed. A meeting of the Ashburton Fete Executive was held on Monday evenmcr, when Mr H. F. Nicoll presided. The- Temuka Pipe Band's offer_«• attend was accepted with thanks. The Railway Department wrote, regretting that it'eonia not cany stock and produce for the fete free of charge, fhe ashburton Dorcas Society forwarded ±/> for the fete fund. It tfas decided to hold tho third crowning ceremony on Saturday. May 8, at 2.30 p.m. The Ashburton Electric Supply Company is illuminating the Ashburton Domain in connection with the fete on the oval in the evening. The drive* niv* all to be lined with electric globes, and the grand stand will show a blaze of colour in beautiful designs. A platform has been erected and this will also be lit . up with midti-colourert lamps. Altogether it is estimated that fully 1000 globes will be used. WADDLNGTON. * After a lone spell of drv weather, rain commenced falling on Wednesday night and continued on Thursday. There was enough to spoil the Malvern V-ricultural and Pastoral Show but not enough to do much good to the vegetation, as the ground has become thoroughly dry and wauts a big soaking. There has been a sharp lrosb sincel-m fact, there have been frosts at intervals during the season, _ cawing much havoc in gardens. KIRWEE. . \ bazaar was held in the Agricultural Hall, Kirwee, on Friday, in conr nection with the Presbyterian Churches of Kirwee, Halkett and Darfield, for tbe purpose of reducing the debt, which had been incurred in the erection ot the manse at Kirwee. Mr George Witty, M.P.. opened the bazaar, ine clav pigeon shooting proved a source of creat attraction. Morris-tube shooting also had a large number of devotees. Throwing at "Kaiser Bill was-a favourite sport. Mr Jennings, of Pync and Co., conducted an auction sale of gifts. There was a hirge amount of produce, comprising wheat, oats, chaff, potatoes, onions and also several pens of fowls. A weightguessing competition was held, a dressed fat lamb having been given for the purpose. This was divided by Messrs T E. Gonwav. G. Donald and W. M'Clelland. who guessed the correct weight, 5541 b. The lamb .was given back and sold for £1 2s. The guessing brought £4 (>s, making a total of £o as. The total takings amounted to about £l2O. Mr J. H. Bedford, of Courtenay, met with a painful accident last Thursday. Ho was stepping on.-a. dray ; wheelffor the purpose of getting ~into the dray, when the horses moved on.
