SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. The V.'aim ate Racing Club's meeting will be held to-da? . Largo uci.s have been attracted tor al! the events on the programme, and as the competitors are drawn from various quarters, the sport promises to be of more than usual interest. ' It is reported that F. D. Jones ha* received an appointment a* trainer to a prominent Canterbury owner. Jones only joined the ranks "of the trainers last year, but while he had charge of .Mr W. E. Bidwill's horses lie achieved considerable success, the performances of Reputation en ruing him a namo as a very cnx>able young" mentor.

The Dunedin correspondent of this paper telegraphs as follows:—As Mr L. C. Hazlett. owner of Palisade and Sister Radius, finds it impossible, owing to business arrangements, to return to Sydney for the Australian Jockey Club's meeting, it is improbable that his horses will be taken over to Randwick.

Kilrain is doing useful work at Trentham and looks in excellent health. It is probable that he will make the trip io Riccarton for the autumn meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club. It is stated that a Christchurch sportsman was negotiating for the purchase of the Porirua horse, Gold SouU, but no business resulted.

A few weeks ago, on the expiry of his term of disqualification. 11. Hatch applied to the Wellington Racing Club for a jockey's license. His case was adjourned on that occasion, but the license has now been granted and Hatch will resume riding forthwith.

Treo Lucerne is reported to be doing good work at Hawora, and he will probably be sent to .Riccarton to fulfil his engagement m tho Great Easter Handicap.

F. G. Porter has made a good recovery from his serious accident at the Wairoa meeting, at the end of January, and he expects to resume race riding about Eastor. A two-year-old filly by Wallace--Cruciform was sold in Melbourne this month forlsoQgs. The Now Zealand-bred filly Garlita. by Charlemagne ll.—Courdnne, has proved a great investment, as she has now won. £8770 in stakes in. Australia.

Moonbria, who is now racing in Sydney, had his running inquired into at Canterbury Park this month. The stewards decided that a stronger rider would have done better with the son of

Merriwee—La Notte. I Reports from Melbourne state that i Di Gama has changed stables and is j .now at Caulfield, under the care of the : ex-New Zealand trainer, J. O'Neill. Negotiations aro in progress for his sale, at a big figure, to a patron of C. Wheeler's stable, which at present shelters Land of Song and the crack two-year-old, Red Signal. The last mail from Australia brought news of the death of Soult King, by Soult—Erey Roe. He was found dead in a paddock on his owner's property in Queensland, haying evidently been strnck by lightning. Soult King, who was a brother to Merry Roe, was purchased as a yearling in Auckland for 300 guineas by Mr G. D. Greenwood, who was acting for a Queensland friend. He raced twice as a three-year-old without success, and was then retired to the stud. He has sired some promising stock, and an offer of 1000 guineas was recently refused for him.

The training track at Canterbury Park has been great!} improved. It has been ploughed up and levelled and at present is in splendid condition. One of the great difficulties that the caretaker has to contend cgainst is the wind, which blows very strongly, and as there is little protection from it tho looso earth on the track is quickly blown away, wiih the result that horses have to work on the hard surface of the track. An extra water supply has been laid down, however, and by a plentiful watering each day the caretaker hopes to retain tho good cushion that is now'on tho track.

The pacer Lopp, after being off the race track for a long term, was put in work a few months ago, and was raced at* a _ few meetings. Although this once brilliant pacer showed a fair turn of speed, he did not come " right back " to his best form, and being not over sound his owner has decided to retire him from the track and use him as a trap horse.

The gelding Sweet Nut, by Galindo Kola Nut, showed great promise as a young pacer, but did not improve as much as was cxpeited. N. L. Prico gave his horse every chance at the pacing gait, bnt was finally compelled to throw him out of work, and he was gelded. Sweet Nut has recently been put into work ajzain, but is now to he tried at the trotting gait, at which he is shaping fairly well so far. Price is acknowledged to be one of the best of trainers of trotters as well as pacers, in fact he prefers horses of the trotting gait. He made a great success in the conversion of Betel Nut, who is half brother to Sweet Nut, by Peralta, from a pacer to a trotter, and he may be successful in his latest attempt at changing the Rait of Sweet Nut. The pacer Radiant Morn is now in work again, under the care of R. W. Franks, at Canterbury Park.

The pacer Hamapuka is being given plenty of work at Addiugton, ana tho horse is going very well.

Harold D.. who won a race at the Akaroa County Racing Club's meeting this month, and three other young horses aro being worked by J. Fraser at Canterbury Park. The trotter Tinperial Crown, who has been enjoying a spell since his run at Canterbury Park at ?sw Year, has recently been put into work again.
