Mr W. Nosworthy. M.P., and Mrs Nosworthy returned to Ashburton by the second express yesterday. The death is announced at New Plymouth of Mr J. J- M'Elwin, an exCanterbury resident.

Mr James Craigie, M.P., who has been spending a few days in Christchurch, will return to Timaru to-day.

Visitors to Christchurch yesterday included:—Messrs F. Whitton and J. King (Wellington), R. D. Pvogers (Inglewood), and G. W. Fcnnell (Westport). At a meeting of the Christchurch Presbyterv on Tuesday a call to the Rev A. f. Thompson. 8.A.. 8.D., of Masterton, to St Andrew's Presbyterian. Church was sustained. Tho Dunedin correspondent of tho "Lyttelton Times" telegraphs that the vacant Crown-solicitorship there has boon conferred on Mr W. C. Macgregor. News was received in Ashburton yesterdav of the death at Auckland of Mr John Snodgrass, who for several years was manager of the Ashburton branch of the Bank of New Zealand.

A report was in circulation in the city yesterday to the effect that Dr Tbacker, M.P. for Christchurch East, was seriously ill. Dr Thacker, far from being a sick man, is on a holiday visit to Okain's Bay.

Miss B. Loy. who for several years past has been.'cookery instructress at the Ashburton Technical School, has resigned her position, in order to take a two years' course of study at the Otawo University, where she has been awarded a home science bursary. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that Captain B. M. Aldwell, of the Wellingtou-Lyttelton ferry steamer Wahine, will leave for Sydney on Fridav to take command of the R..M.S. Marama in tho San Francisco service.

At, a meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board held yesterday, the' resignation of Miss B-. Hay, second assistant mistress at Tai Tapu, was accepted, and her appointment to the position of assistant mistress at Sydenham was approved.

A cablegram has been received announcing that Captain A. Lyle Watt, ot the oth Royal Highlanders (The Black Watch) was killed' at the front on March 10. Captain Watt, who was on a visit to his sister, Miss Mary Watt, Napier, during the winter, returned to Scotland at the outbreak of war to rejoin his regiment. Members of the Linwood Football Club made a presentation last night to Mr A. J. Allard, the retiring treasurer, who has held tho position for the last nine years and who has been an active member for twenty years. The presentation was made by the club captuin (Mr G. Evans) and Mr Allard briefly returned thanks. At the annual meeting of the Linwood Football Club last night reference was made to the valuable services rendered to the Rugby Union by the persident, Mr G. H. Mason, who does not intend to seek re-election this year. It was decided that a letter should he sent to Mr Hanson voicing the club's appreciation of his work. • In response to.the retjuest of a large and influential deputation of burgesses that waited upon him last night, Mr C. I. Jennings .Mayor of Rangiora, consented to be nominated for another term of office. Councillors W. M'Gruer, F. B. Lane and J. Sutherland and Messrs C. W. Bell and H. C. Wilson wero the spokesmen of the deputation, and the first-named councillor took the opportunity to express to Mr Jennings the general feeling of satisfaction felt in tho town at his success in the recent libel action in which ho was the plaintiff.
