MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., presided at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Bernard Hans was charged with having been drunk, with having obstructed the arresting constable, and with having used obscene language. On the first charge he was fined 6s, on the second he was convicted and discharged, and on the third he was fined 40a, m default one month’s imprisonment. Francis Lawrence Kirwan, for having been disorderly while drunk in Oxford Terrace, was fined 20s, in default -seven days’ imprisonment. Elizabeth Sheehan pleaded not guilty to a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond, having been found by night in an unoccupied house in St Asaph Street. • Accused was convicted and discharged. Michael Sheehan, John Walsh, •Emma Warren and Mary Ann Douglas* were charged with being idle and disorderly persons, having insufficient lawful means of support. After evidence had been given Sheehan, who had fifty-five convictions against him, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. The other accused were convicted and discharged. Bridget Trainor, for having procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, was fined 20s, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. William Barker, a married man, separated from his wife, admitted that he •was living with Amy Arthur, an unmarried woman. Barker was charged with being £lO7 11s lOd in arrears in his maintenance of four children in the receiving home. Amy Arthur was charged with being in arrears to tho amount of £26 in respect of two children in the receiving home. The children w<*re Illegitimate, the father being a man who had gone to the war. The caso against the female defendant was adjourned for a week. Barker was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, tho warrant to be suspended, provided lie paid up 10s a week off the. arrears, the original order of 28s - a week to be suspended.

William Crawford, £2 os in airears in the maintenance of his illegitimate child, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment in default of payment. Rose Lily May White asked for maintenance, separation and guardianship orders against David James White. Complainant brought allegations against defendant of cruelty, misconduct and failing to maiutaih, which defendant denied. Mr Bishop said that as the parties were living apart there would be no need for a separation order. Maintenance was fixed at .61 per week and the wife was given the custody of the child.

ASHBURTON. Mr W. H. JRundle, J.P., and Mr G. W. Andrews, J.P i 5 presided at the Ashburton Magistrate’s Court yesterday. - Charles Blick, who was put off the train while travelling between Temuka and Christchurch, was charged with being drunk and with damaging a cell can, valued at I2s 6d. Accused was fined 10s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, on the . charge of drunkenness, and on tho other charge was convicted and ordered to make good the damage done to tho cell can, u> default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment.
