SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. The health of the Eiccarton trainer, I", Cutts, showed no signs of improvement yesterday, his condition being critical. G. Murray Aynsley. brought "Warstep and Snub back from Wingatui on Friday, the Yaldhnrst pair, Dinner Gong and Recorder, returning by the same train. The remainder of the Iticcarton horses which were racing at the Dunedin Jockey Club's autumn meeting were brought home by the special train, arriving yesterday morning.

Night-watch and Autumnus were associated in a useful working gallop over a mile at Riccarton on Saturday. Nightwatch has given his trainer a lot of trouble ever since he was a two-year-old, and has gone amiss more than once when his prospects looked bright. At present, however, he is moving along in good style and there seems a reasonable possibility that lie will be got through a preparation for *- raco at one or the autumn meetings.

It is understood that Warstep will make her next public appearance in the Trentham Gold Cup, the two-mile weight-for-age race at the autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. She mav then go on to Awapuni, for the Manawntu Racing Club's meeting, where the programme this year will probably include a mile and a quarter weight-for-agc event. P. E. Hazelman has been appointed tn the position of trainer to Mr W E Eidwill for the present. R. D. O'Donnell left for the north on Saturday, in charge of Sauci and Dinner (>ong, who will represent Mr G. L. Stead at the autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club. Pavlova, has been scratched for the Wanganui Cup. Interest in the race will be somewhat spoilt by her withdrawal, as, with all her weight, she was expected to play a prominent part in the contest. Tier trainer, however, considered her harshly handicapped. Cold Soult and Jem. two other members of Prosser's team, have been scratched for all their Wanganui engagements for the same reason. Some exceptionally good racing was witnessed at Wingatui on Saturday, the day's sport being the best ever seen on the course, while it would have been hard to improve on it anywhereCharmilla, who won the Wingatui Handicap, the concluding event at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday, ran a good race on the opening day in the Publicans' Handicap, in which she finished second to Sartorze. She has always had the reputation of being a speedy filly and last autumn, as a two-year-old, she won a six-fur-long race at Riccarton in lmin 11 4-osec. In the early part of the present season she raced rather disappointingly and her latest effort, of running out a strong mile, would come as a surprise to those who looked on her as no more than a sprinter. She is by Charlemagne 11., who has had an exceptionally good season, her dam. Armilla, being by Castor—Necklace, by Musket—Locket. Armilta is also the dam of Armigera (dam of Ingoda) «nd the speedy Armlet.
