Air Sidney R. Conley, of Derby, arrived in Christchurch by the ferry boat’ from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr H. Abel, a well-known swinmming enthusiast of Sydney, is a visitor to Christchurch.

Captain J. Bone, Marine Superintendent New Zealand Shipping Company, arrived from the north yesterday.

Aressrs E. W. Boyd (Greymouth), J. Patterson (Wanganui) and A. Grant fTimaru) arrived iu Christchurch yesterday.

All - 11. AI. Wilson, general manager of the Government Tourist Department, arrived from tho north yesterday morntag and will go on to Hanmer totoay.

Mr David Afills, manager of the Union Steam Ship Company’s'Sydney office, arrived from tho north yesterday by the ferry steamer, en route to Dunedin.

A Sydney Press Association message says that Mr Alackenzie, a New Zealand inspector of schools, and Air Alorris, another New Zealand educationalist, were welcomed at the teachers’ conference.

Among the visitors to Christchurch are Messrs N. M. Thompson (Sydney), T. R. Hendersou (San Francisco), Russell (Alolbourne), R. Roberts and AI. Colgan (Sydney), and J. Timmins (Adelaide).

Air W. H. G. Watson, who served bis apprenticeship at the Addington Workshops, and subsequently took up the engineering profession on tho Continent, returned to Christchurch yesterday after an absence of six years. At the Ashburton Borough School break-up on Tuesday afternoon the pupils of the sixth standard presented their teacher, Air S. Baird, with a gift of a suede w.allet. The presentation was made by Tricey Bruntou.

On the closing of the East Christchurch schools for the holidays Aliss Dearslcy, tho mistress of the second standard girls, was presented with a brooch and autograph album by her pupils, together with their love and best wishes.

Dr H. T. J. Thacker, and Messrs H. G. Ell, J. C. Thomson, G. Witty, J. Dickie, J. A. Hanan. L. AI. Isitt, G. W. Russell, G. W. Forbes, J. Craigie, T. K. Sidey, J. Colvin, C. J. Talbot and J. Anstey, members of Parliament, arrived from the north yesterday. The Hon R. H. Rhodes, PostnnsterGeneral, who arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning, will stay in town over the holidays. On Boxing Day he will be present at tbe Halswell sports, at tbe Little River gala in aid of the Belgian Fund, and .at tho Akaroa regatta. Air Rhodes fears that owing to these engagements he will bo unable to attend tbe Doyleston sports to be held on the same day. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin states that at a meeting of the University Council yesterday it was unanimously decided to appoint Dr Alexander Murray Drennan to the position of professor of clinical pathology at the University of Otago. Dr Drennan is thirty years of age and is at present assistant to the professor of pathology in the University of Edinburgh. He was the most brilliant student of his year at Edinburgh. He- is to have tlio option of coming either in June or in December next.
