NEWS AND NOTES. ! It' is a long time since Riccavtou has worn such a deserted appearance as it does at present. Nearly seventy horses are away in different parts of the Domiuion, with a view to assisting at holiday fixtures, and as a result there are few horses working on the local tracks. The quiet spell, so far as Kieoarton is concerned, will last I until the conclusion of the New Year I meetings, when trainers will gradually get back to their homes, but some of those who are absent in Auckland will not return till about the end of January, as they will first make a stay at Trentham for tho Wellington Cup meeting. With Fabrikoff sold and Silver Shield and Atbeldana turned out at Aleadowbank for a spell, Mr Harvey Patterson has no horses in active commission at present. Good progress is being made with the work of erecting the now members’ and stewards’ stand at the New Zea- 1 land Metropolitan Trotting Club’s course at Addington, From present indications it should be available for occupation at the club’s summer meeting, to be held early iu February. lho nominations received this week lor the Canterbury Park Trotting' Club's meeting, to be held on January 1 and 2. must be considered exceptionally good. Taken all round, they are not so large as those secured for the recent meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club, but the classes at Canterbury Park are a good deal tighter, and quality is very strongly in evidenco in the list. The Champion ' Handicap,, for horses that can do 4min 4()sec or better, has attracted one of the finest fields of horses ever got together in tho Dominion.

Several Canterbury stables are lepresented at the Gore Trotting Club's meeting, to be held -on Saturday. In some of the events tho fields nt Gore are a trifle disappointing, but tho mooting should bo a good ono. The track at Addington was closed lor work yesterday. There was a mob of sheep on the inside of the course reducing the grass, which has become very long, and probably that was the reason of tho track not being open. Trainers used tbe new track ad,7 tuning the racecourse, which, all things considered, was in good order tor slow work.

Arthur Cox has jnst taken in band a two-year-old colt by Harold Dillon, trom a Huon Jun. mare, that was imported from Australia some time ago by 3- West Coast sportsman. Tho -youngster is a pacer, and is a good looker, but it may be sotae time before he is ready to race.

M Dermott has White House in capital form, -and she continues to show her attractive work on the training track.

Bonny Jenny, tho American pacing mare, is in great form at present, ana should pace well in any of the sprint races for which she may. be started during tho holidays. The trotter Michael Galindo is working well, and is apparently sounder than formerly. At the same time, he is frequently better one day and very inferior tho next, and it will probably be a long time before Tasker o e ts him really well. 0 Kinetic looks none the worse f— his racing at New Brighton last week, but tho southern owned horse is not proving too reliable in his races at present.

A well-grown and handsome three-year-old filly by Wildwood Jun., from Lady Rosebery, is receiving tho rudiments oi her education from C. James, and if looks go for anything she should be a good trotter.

The racing in the south has evidently proved beneficial to the big pacer Prince Toronto, as he appears in great heart at present, and is doing his work well on the track.

The owner of Whit© House was unlucky in losing a two-year-old fullbrother to her recently. The horse died go mo little time after being gelded. Hiram Galindo is fast getting into racing condition, and is pacing along in good style. Up to the present this promising horse is remaining sound. C. . Janies is working a good-looking trotter by Wild'moor from that good pacing mare Miss Burlington. The horse is improving fast, and should soon be racing. Lucky Mount, who has been at the stud; is again iu work, and is now being trained by E. M'Dermott-.

Trainers of horses in Western Australia—that is, those who come under the authority of the West Australian Turf Club—h ave beeu informed by the secretary of that club that in future it will he necessary for them to keep a register book for the purpose of recordbig:—(a) The description, name, age. and brands, marks, colour, etc., of all horses trained by.them; (b) the date when each horse is received by them; and (c) the date when each horse leaves their possession; and also to forward in each case, from time to time, to the secretary of . the West Australian Turf Club, all the above particulars. Such register is to be open for inspection at all reasonable times by a member of the committee or the secretary, or any persou nominated by tho committee. They were also told to forward at once to Mr G. H.' Wickham a list of all horses which are now under their care, together with such particulars as are mentioned above.

Apprentice riders over whom the West > Australian Turf Club is able to exercise any control, are not to be permitted to squander their earnings during the term of apprenticeship. It was recently decided by the committee of that club that from the first day of January every apprentice whose indentures of apprenticeship have beeu or shall hereafter be approved by the West Australian Turf Club, and who has received oi; shall hereafter receive a permit to ride, and every master, will be required" to furnish to the secretary after each race meeting particulars of all moneys earned by such apprentice for riding at such meeting; and the apprentice or the master, whoever shall receive such moneys so earned, shall forthwith pay over to the secretary for the benefit of the apprentice one-half of such moneys, or sucli proportion thereof in each case as the committee may decido, which when received are to be paid into an account at the savings bank foi‘ tho benefit of such apprentice, ‘to be paid to him on tho expiry of his apprenticeship, or as the apprentice shall then direct. Should the apprentice or the master fail to comply with these regulations, the permit to ride will be liable to cancellation. It has been long understood that some apprentices do not receive a fair percentage of their earnings from masters, and the West Australian Turf Club may have had that aspect of the case in mind when it framed the regulation referred to. ELLERSLIE OPERATIONS. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 23. The bulk of the horses at Ellerslie this morning were restricted to useful pacing. Sutala. with the assistance of Nordics. over the first three furlongs, sprinted five furlongs on the two-year-oid track in Imin Sscc, finishing well. Fashion Plate jumped three hurdles in good style. Sir Kuox, Gazette and Gaycium arrived yesterday. y
