BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEW BRIGHTON. r The New Brighton Borough Council met on Monday evening; present— the Mayor (Mr C. H. Winny) and Councillors J. Ainger, A. W. Bergh, F. Israelson, W. H. Staniland, F. Kibblewhit© and C. Withell. The Tramway Board referring, to tne lighting of the Esplanade, wrote that ' as it would he asked to quote tor stree ’ lighting in bulk by some of the local authorities, it would not be desirable that any arrangements should be maae '• for separate lights in the meantime. The Board also reported that the tramway bridge was in good condition, but recommended that the wood and iron work should be thoroughly cleaned and treated to a coat of tar and paint a a cost of £3O. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £195 13s 9d. The By-laws Committee reported that permits had been issued for the erection of seven buildings to the value of £1458. The committee also gave no■•i tice of motion as follows:—“That the resolution carried on October 12 that no licenses be granted for stands for . the sale of goods of any descrip- : tion within the borough bo rescinded. The report was adopted. The Fire Brigade Committee’s report recommended that boots and necessities to the value of £l2 11s should be purchased. The extension to the Brigade ' tower was completed, and the new firebell hung in place, and it would he tested during the week. Tho report was adopted. The matter of having the old clay pit on the Bexley side valued for purposes of sale was left in the hands of the Finance Committee. KAIAPOI. The Kaiapoi Borough Council met last night; present—the Mayor (Mr J. W. Barnard) and Councillors H. Kevell, \V. Robb, S. Rinaldi, R. Croft, F. Garnett, R. Dunn and J. Williams. The request of the fire brigade engineer and foreman of works for holidays were granted subject to the approval of the Fire Prevention and Works Committees respectively. Mr Ralph Pamham wrote complaining of the action of the Mayor in commandeering his motor-oar on Anniversary Day to convey helpers to quench the fire at the beaoh reserve. It was decided that the olerk should explain the circumstances of the act to Mrj • Parnham and that the Council should j reimburse the owner of the car for any damage done. Councillor Williams stated that only the officers of the fire brigade had helmets and the men had no protection from falling debris in fires. He moved that twelve helmets should be procured. Councillor Rinaldi seconded the motion. Councillor Garnett moved as an amendment that the matter should bo referred to the Fire Prevention Committee for a report. Councillor Croft seconded the amendment, suggesting that the committee should have power to act. The amendment was carried. The Lighting Committee was given an extension of time in which to report on the question of obtaining electricity from the Lake Coleridge scheme. It was decided to close the Council’s office from December 24 to January 2,, both days inclusive, and the Council decided to adjourn for a month.
