SPORTING.

I JNEWS AND NOTES. / The trotter Belvic, who is now being J worked with the straps, with the idea I of converting her to the pacing gait, | is taking' kindly to her new style of going, and although not worked fast is beginning to pace accurately. Clingschild and Tho Whip are doing slow work at Addington, and both horses look very well. The pacer Aberteldy is improving and is now being worked along much faster, but the old fellow is still a long way from being fit. The pacer Erina is very well at present, and is doing a lot of solid -work. The mare goes well in her training work, without tho aid of tho hopples. The new training track that is being laid down by the Metropolitan Trotting Club on the new ground recently leased, is being gone on with, but not as fast as was expected. It being a half-mile track, and not altoaether of • the best shape, it is understood it was the club's intention to have it well banked all round, in fact, when seen last week a portion had been completed and was banked nearly four feet. It .was stated on the track, however, that tho owners of tho ground have taken exception to a • banked track being laid down, and therefore, the club will have to discontinue that part'of the work. If this is' correct- the track will be useless lor fast work, because horses will not he able to get round the corners at fast speed. It is felt in some quarters that the club is ill-advised. in laying down the new track. What would have "filled the bill" much better would have been a track inside the present racing track, which would not have been an expensive job, when the centre of the ground was being levelled. All slow and medium paced work could have been done on it. Ine race track could have been used tor fast, work only, and the inner part could have been kept for race days, by only allowing the outer portion to be used for training work. A three-year-old by Lord Elmo, from the speedy pacer Bessio 8., has been put in work by B. Jardon, and in due course'will .carry tho colours of Mr M. Bchamanski. The pacer Wallace Junior has been purchased from Mr H. M'Lean by 13. Jarden.vho has had him under his charge''for some tune. Wallace Junior was a very erratic customer m the early part of his racing career, and repeatedly refused to leave the mark in: his racesL Jarden appears to have cured him of his wayward habits and he should not be long before he wins a good race. The trotter Michael Galindo has improved very much after a week's slow work. He has to a great extent thrown- off his lameness, although moving.somewhat tenderly on his foreleg. He was worked much faster than usual yesterday, and showed a lot of his old brilliancy, pulling up. very ■well. The hors 9 looks in capital health.': It is reported that the jiacer Lady Clare, a candidate for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, is progressing satisfactorily in her training work. The trotter Mayflower is again doing good work at Addington, and it is to be hoped that this speedy but unreliable mare will do her best in a race the next time she starts. Bonification is doing a lot of solid work at Addington and the horse looks very forward. At one time it was thought this horse would develop into a high-class pacer, but up to the present he has not fulfilled expectations. Arthur Cox is working a good young trotter by Rothschild from Woodlander. He is only a three-year-old, but already shapes exceedingly well in his training work. The pacer lion Csesar is doing a lot of slow work and looks very well, despite'the fact that his hocks bear an enlarged appearance. It is satisfactory to'know that this brilliant horse is keeping sound. Indications point to the spring meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club, to be held next month, proving the most successful fixture witnessed at Wingaiui at this season of the year. The first cause for congratulation is that the nominations are much larger than Usual, while even more important is the fact that the horses engaged represent good class. Among the old division likely to be seen at the meeting are Warstep, Sauci, Quarantine, Magdala, Palisade, First Glance, Martius, Sister Radius and My ' Lawyor. who should be a decided attraction in the leading handicaps. There will, in addition, be a fine array of younger horses. The three-year-olds lolt in the Dunedin Guineas include Rencontre, , First Flight, Don Francisco, Charmilla, Marsa, Bold Stroke and Samiel, who can be regarded as representing the best form of their age in the South Island, while Fabrfkoff, though not eligible for the classic race, may be seen in handicap events. Quite as satisfactory, in its way, is the two-year-old outlook. The juveniles, ol course, have no public form on which to base.opinions, but among thoso engaged at Wingatui next month are tho most promising representatives from all the leading stables in Canterbury. It. looks, therefore, as if the Dunedin "Stakes would provide an excellent trial for the Welcome Stakes, 60 far .as- South Island candidates are concerned. - It is probable that most of those engaged will make the trip to Wingatui, as owners are doubtless alive to the advantages of racing experience. The want of a race has 6eriously handicapped more than one South Island youngster in the past, when it came to tackling the seasoned juveniles from the North Island in the Welcome Stakes, but it is evident that owners do not intend to miss anv opportunities this season. The Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting will gain in importance, as a result of this policy on the part of Canterbury owners. The great pity is that sport in tho South should be so largely dependent en the assistance of visiting owners. WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB. [Per Press Association.! WANGANUI,' September 24. The Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting opened to-day in fine weathcT. There was a large attendance. The profits of the meeting aro to be given to the Patriotic Fund. ..
