PENNY POSTAGE. .EXTENDED TO SAMOA. [From Ovn Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, September 2. Ono of the first acts of the British authorities, upon taking possession of Samoa, was to introduce the Imperial penny postage to and from the conquered islands. The Postmaster-General has announced that henceforth the postage rat© to Samoa will bo one penny per ounce, the usual rate of postage to the British Dominions. When Samoa was under German rule the postage was twopence halfpenny for the first ounce, and one penny halfpenny for each additional ounce. INCREASED FREIGHTS. SELECT COMMITTEE APPOINTED. A select committee, consisting of ten members, was set up by Parliament tonight to examine and report upon such questions relating to freights and charges levied by shipping companies upon produce and goods of any kind shipped to or from New Zealand, as it may think desirable, or may be referred to it by'the Government.' The committee will have power to call for persons and papers, and must report to the House within twenty-one days. The committee consists of Sir Walter Buchanan, the Hon D. Buddo, Mr E. P. Lee, Mr A. M- Myers, Mr E. Newman, Mr G. V. Pearce, Mr G. W. Russell, Mr A. Wilkinson, Sir Joseph Ward and the Prime Minister. MILITARY PENSIONS BOARDS. INCREASED POWERS SUGGESTED. [Per Press Association.] ROTORUA, September % The local Patriotic Fund Committee intends circularising local bodies, sugi gesting that legislation should be introduced providing for the constitution of local Military Pensions Boards to be elective bodies, with power to levy rates within prescribed areas with the object of supplementing the pensions under the Military Pensions Act payable to the dependents of members .of the Expeditionary Force.
