FIRES.

RESIDENCE DESTROYED. [Per Prisss Association.] HASTINGS, September 2J "Tauroa," Mr Mason Chambers's fine residence on the Havelock Hills, was completely destroyed by fire this afternoon. It is supposed that a defective chimney caused the outbreak, on the first floor. Only the servants were at home. Nothing was saved. The loss includes a valuable library and a collection of curios which cannot bo replaced. The outbuildings boing concrete were saved. The fire was prevented from spreading to the plantations. The insurances are in the Farmers' Mutual. The house was insured for £1750 and the furniture for £1750. The total loss is estimated at £7OOO.
