Colonel Cossgrovo returned from the north yesterday. Mr E. W. Fen, of Dunedin, arrived from Wellington yesterday. Dir O. H. Beothani, of Masterton, arrived from the north yesterday. Arrivals from Wellington by the ferry steamer yesterday included Messrs D. Miller* J. 11. 'Dlusson and H. L. Dl’KayDir S. G. The Dunedin correspondent of the “Lyttelton Times” telegraphs annouuciug tho death of Mrs Borrows, relict of Dr Borrows and aunt of Dir E. C. Hunt, of Christchurch. \ Press Association telegram from Wellington states that Dir Arthur Thomas Bothamlov, clerk assistant of tho Legislative Council, has been appointed Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod. Mr John Fuller, jun., in a letter written when nearing Honolulu, on his way to San Francisco in the Ventura, says that his health has greatly benefited by tho long sea voyage, and he hopes to arrive back in Wellington “fit and strong.” Mr Fuller expects to be in California for nineteen days before ho leaves on his return to New Zealand.

An illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns are to be presented to Dir G. L. Peacocko, who is retiring from the chairmanship of the Auckland Railwavs League, in recognition of tho services given by him during twenty-two years to tho successive organisations culminating in the Auckland Railways League.

Captain Skinner, who for the past thirty-five years has traded continuously with sailing vessels on the East Const, between Gisborne and Auckland, is about to retire from the sea. On his return to Auckland, Captain Skinner will hand over the command of tho schooner Ivaeo to Captain Lane. Captain Skinner entered the Auckland-Gis-horno service with the Dlinnie Haro, his other subsequent commands being the Fleetwing. Mr L. M. Sandstom, brother of Dr Sanristeiii, of Christchurch, who is a mining engineer, is reported by tho Boston “Globe’’ of April 14 to have had a very exciting experience) while crossing the, Atlantic to America. While the vessel was in tlie grasp of a furious storm Mr Sandstom was conversing on deck when a mountainous wave shot over the stern and engulfed tho entire aft section of the ship. Dfr Sandstcin was caught by the mass of water and after swimming tor a few seconds was hurled against the starboard rail. He managed to grasp the top rail just as he was being swept overboard and while reluctant afterwards to discuss the matter he admitted that it was a very c !°®,° U. • Ho sustained a rather painful injury to one of his kneecaps.
