THE BARRED DOOR.
HINDUS AT VANCOUVER
AN APPEAL TO THE KING
Bt Tekeraph—Press A seociation—Copyright. VANCOUVER, June 4.
The Hindus aboard tho Komagata Main aro. appealing to tho King and the Duke of Connaught, stating that they are refused food and water by tho immigration officials. Tho Department declares that it will allow the Hindus ashore to fetch food and water hut they refuse to accept concessions, declaring that they will starvo until they aro admitted or until the charier of the vessel expires. SHADOW OF ASIATIC EXPANSION. (Received June 4, 9.50 p.m.) LONDON, June 4. The “Times” says that it is difficult to believe that tho wisest Indian leaders approve of shipping Hindus to Canada. A controversy is based on the assertion that British citizenship involves the right of unrestricted entry into any part of the British dominions but free peoples save tho right to say whom they will admit. An attempt to force the phraso beyond its legitimate meaning will only prejudice the position of tho Indians themselves. That the shadow of Asiatic expansion has already fallen on Australia and New Zealand is seen in tho reluctance of Australia to use Asiatic labour for the development of the Northern Territory though urgent noed exists for such development.
