HARBOUR BOARD.

YESTERDAY’S MEETING. The Lyttelton Harbour Board met in Christchurch yesterday; present Messrs R. Moore (chairman), A. Kayo, M. J. Miller, J. Little, C. Allison, J. R. Webb, G. Scott, J. J. Dougall, T. D. Boag, F. Horrell, H. Friedlander and C. J. Harper. The chairman welcomed Mr Harper. Mr Harper in rc-ply said that the previous representative of the Ashburton County Council, the late Mr J. Lambie, had done excellent work on the Board. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. Tliu b&nk book tno harbour fund to bo in credit ~134i 10s 3d, which was more than sufficient to provide for payment of tho_unpaidaccounts, amounting to £lo/o os 10cl, to be pasied for payment that d• During the past month one hunched and ninety-seven vessels, comprising thirteen oversea and one hundred and eighty-four intercolonial and coastal vos-els, entered the Port of Lyttelton, with a total net tonnage ot lbU,oSl tons, as against two hundred and eleven vessels, aggregating 191.300 tons, during tno corresponding month of last vrnr. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer reported that the dredge Canterbury had been principally ensured at the outer channel, taking occasional loads from tlio inner harbour. The month’s work amounted to 142,043 tons, of which 124,742 tons lnd been taken from tho outer channel and 18,171 tons from the inner harbour between No. 2 jetty and tho Gladstone Pier. The whole quantity had been pumped, into the reclamation area with the exception of one lead of 910 tons, which was carried to sea. Tim dredge Tewhaka had been engaged between No. 2 and No. 3 jetties, whence she had lifted 5040 ton,, which had been dumped behind the rcclamation mole. The New Zealand Shipping Comnnny’s latest vessel was ten feet lo>-<r"r and one foot wider than the Gorinthic. It was clear, therefore, that the movement towards larger yes-els still continued, so the Board could not relax its efforts in providing accommodation for them. The reclamation mol) now extended 1594 feet from the western breakwater. The progress durum the month had been less than usual owing to bad weather and excessive settlement in the outer part of tho work, comprising one hundred feet. Tho work of widening, lengthening and rebuilding the outer wharf of tho Gladstone Pier was well in hand. Very long pi’es were found necessary, but satisfactory, results were being obtained with the spliced piles An improved pile driving winch engino was facilitating the work. Tho report rvas adopted. HARBOUR IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE

Tho Harbour Improvement Committee reported having considered tho request of fl. deputation that chaisjos for the use of the outlying jetties should bo reduced or abolished. It recommended that tho following reply should be sent to the Mount Herbert County Council:—“That, as the total revenue received last year from all the outlying, jetties amounted to about £l4O, of which £OB 11s 4d was paid in respect of passengers as per the accompanying return, and as tlio expenditure for the upkeep of the jetties for the same period was £B3, the difference of £oi does not cover interest, nor make provision for depreciation on tho capital cost or these jetties amounting to £3OOO. lour committee has, therefore, no rcconij mendution to make in tho matter. It had referred consideration ot tho staff salaries to a sub-committee, coilsi ting of Messrs R. Moore, H. Fnedlander, A. Kaye, G. Scott and M. J. Miller, to report to the next meeting of tho committee. It had asked the engineer to submit a report on tho cost of constructing a suitablo jetty on tho east side of Port Levy, as asked for by Mr H. Field on behalf of. the residents of the district, and to indicate the probable revenue to be derived therefrom under the Boards outlying i ties bv-law. It asked for an extension of time to report on the Lvttclton Borough Council s applicnion to lea-e the jetty site at Diamond Harbour for the purpose of erecting a jetty thereon. In regard to the Lmon Steam Ship Company’s letter, asking that the ferry steamer should be granted precedence in leaving the wharves, the committee had no recommendation to make. In regard to tenders for the supply of fender piles for use in tho Board’s wharves, the committee had accepted the tender of Messrs Reese Bros., for the sum of £204 1 10s.
