NEAV ZEALANDERS AND THEIR BATTLESHIP. LETTER FROAI CAPTAIN HALSEY. The Mayor has received a letter front Captain Halsey, commander of tnu battleship N<jw Zealand, in regard to a sum of £SOO, surplus after meeting expenses connected with the battleship’s visit to Lyttelton, which it is intended to use for gunnery prizes. After acknowledging the Mayor’s let-; ter, Captain Halsey says : —“ No words • of mine can adequately express the ! feelings of myself and the officers and men of the New Zealand in regard to the magnificent generosity of the people of New Zealand. Such acts as this bind more closely the dominions and the Alother Country, and most decidedly conduce to the efficiency of the ship so whole-heartedly given bv the people of New Zealand.” He adds that the reception given to those on the New" Zealand will never be forgotten.
